Job Overview

• Specialty: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
• Unit Type: Palliative care inpatient unit
• Bed Count: 16 beds (palliative/general medicine/surgery)
• Staffing Ratio: 1 RN to 5 patients
• Scheduling: Self-scheduling
• Primary Patient Population: Symptom management and/or end-of-life care for patients with cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, pulmonary disease, or neurological disease

Experience & Licenses

• Minimum Experience: 1 year (18 months experience in specialty preferred)
• Licenses: Registered Nurse (RN) - Compact license accepted
• Certifications: BLS (American Heart Association)

Skills & Procedures

• IV insertion and PICC line management
• Ability to read cardiac strips
• Experience with epidurals and ventilators
• Common procedures and skills:

  • Central line management
  • Tracheotomy care
  • Ostomy management
  • Wound vac care
  • Foley catheter care
  • IV starts and peripheral lab draws
  • Arterial blood draws
  • Dubhoff/NGT placement and management
  • Management of various intravenous drips (cardiac, insulin, heparin)
• Use of ancillary staff on unit

Equipment & Medications

• Common equipment: wound vac, PCA pumps, epidurals, tracheostomy care
• Top medications used: insulin gtt, heparin gtt, morphine, dilaudid

Additional Requirements

• Must pass Relias exams upon booking (2 attempts allowed; failure on second attempt results in pre-start cancellation)
• Must comply with 80-mile radius rule

Contract Length

• 13 weeks
