Emergency Room Travel Nurse Opportunity

Location & Facility

• Level 3 Trauma Center
• 29-bed Emergency Department (ED)
• Additional beds: 4 Behavioral Health (BDU), 7 Fast Track (FT) beds (all can swing to ED beds)
• Non-teaching hospital
• Total facility beds: 341
• Adult and pediatric patient population (neonate to geriatric)

Contract Length

• 4 weeks

Unit & Work Environment

• Unit: Emergency Care Center (ECC) / Emergency Room (ER)
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: Typically 1:5, sometimes higher depending on volume
• Very busy community setting; nurses must be comfortable with ratios higher than 1:4
• Ancillary staff support:

  • CNA/PCT coverage: 7a-11p (3 staff), 11p-3a (3 staff), 3a-7a (2 staff), plus a float 11a-7p
  • Unit clerk/secretary: 1 per shift
  • Crisis clinicians: 7a-11p (1 staff)
  • Advanced Practice Providers: 3 staggered shifts from 8a-11p

Orientation

• 20 hours for short contracts
• 24 hours for 13-week contracts

Scheduling & Shifts

• Shift hours: 7a-7p, 7p-7a, 11a-11p, 3p-3a
• Rotating schedule
• Weekend and holiday work required
• No call required
• No block scheduling available
• Self-scheduling not available

Requirements & Experience

• Minimum 1 year clinical experience overall
• Minimum 1 year experience in Emergency Room specialty
• Prior travel experience preferred but not required
• Charge nurse experience preferred
• Certifications required:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) — must be active or proof of class prior to start
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) — required prior to starting
• Epic EMR experience within the past 2 years is mandatory
• Nurses must be able to manage drips, start IVs, perform EKGs, and administer respiratory treatments
• Experience working with high patient volume and acuity is essential

Clinical & Unit Specifics

• Documentation system: EPIC
• Medication system: Pyxis
• Floating: Not required
• Charge nurse duties: Required
• Respiratory and anesthesia support available 24/7
• Nurses manage ventilators in collaboration with respiratory therapists
• Nurses responsible for care of boarded patients including medical/surgical, long-term care, psychiatric, and COVID patients
• Critical care patients are rapidly transferred to ICU
• Zero tolerance for cell phone or earbud use while working

Dress Code & Appearance

• Scrubs: Navy blue and white
• Shoes: Closed toe required
• Hair/beard: Clean shaven
• No artificial nails allowed
• Jewelry: Not specified

Equipment

• Phillips MP40 monitors
• Alaris IV pumps

Additional Notes

• Reliable personal or rental vehicle strongly recommended (public transportation not available)
• Vehicles should have all-season or snow tires November through April
• Complete and detailed work history required for submission, including bed count, EMR, and facility type
• All employment gaps over 90 days must be explained
