Nephrology RN Position - Peoria, Illinois

Contract Length

• 18 weeks

Department Details

• Specialty: Nephrology
• Unit Size: 21 beds (all private except one semi-private room)
• Equipment: Overhead lift equipment in all rooms
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Days: 1:4-5
  • Nights: 1:5-6
• Patient Types:

  • ESRD, AKI
  • Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis patients
  • Parathyroidectomies (some with auto-implants)
  • Ileal conduit creations, TURPS, prostatectomies, kidney stones
  • Graft/fistula repairs
  • Deceased and living donor kidney and pancreas transplant (post-op and rejection)
  • Transplant biopsies
  • General medical overflow

Required Certifications and Licenses

• Active RN license
• BLS (AHA)

Experience and Skills

• General medical background required
• Preferred: nephrology or urology experience
• Positive attitude, teamwork, and dependability are essential
• RNs are not required to titrate drips

Staffing and Support

• Charge Nurse present 24/7 (usually does not take patient assignments)
• House Supervisor available 24/7
• Patient Care Technicians (PCTs):

  • Ratio: 1:10-11 on days and nights
  • Duties: vital signs, baths, activity, accu-cheks, Foley catheter removal, CBI management (not titrating)
• Respiratory Therapists available for respiratory treatments; RNs administer inhalers
• No ventilators; BiPAP/CPAP used only for sleep apnea
• Telemetry monitored by TeleTechs on another unit; nurses are not required to interpret strips

Scheduling and Shifts

• Shift Options: 3 shifts of 12 hours each

  • Days: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
  • Nights: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
• Self-scheduling available; flexible block scheduling to meet traveler and unit needs
• Weekend Requirement:

  • Days: 2 weekend 12-hour shifts plus 1 weekday 12-hour shift (weekends every other weekend)
  • Nights: Weekends are Friday, Saturday, Sunday; fewer weekend shifts may be required
• Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday (negotiable)
• No call or standby shifts required
• Floating: May float to general medical units, rarely to ED or ICU as sitter or help-all

Orientation and Policies

• Orientation: 3 days with preceptor
• Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
• Drug-Free Campus: Negative drug screen required for all panels
• Dress Code:

  • Any color scrubs allowed
  • No artificial/gel nails or chipped polish
  • No visible tattoos or piercings
  • Females may wear one pair of simple earrings

Additional Notes

• Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
• OSF Call Off Policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or payback required
