Position Overview

Seeking an experienced Oncology Nurse to provide comprehensive care to adult and geriatric patients with cancers such as endometrial, bladder, renal, ovarian, and cervical. The unit specializes in chemotherapy, clinical trials, brachytherapy, and continuous bladder irrigation (CBI), with strong emphasis on infection prevention and patient fall management.


Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver direct patient care to oncology patients, addressing physical and emotional needs.
  • Administer chemotherapy and monitor for adverse reactions.
  • Participate in clinical trials, including data collection and documentation.
  • Perform specialized procedures like brachytherapy and neobladder care.
  • Implement infection prevention protocols and maintain patient safety.
  • Monitor telemetry, interpret dysrhythmias, and respond to patient condition changes.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary and rapid response teams.
  • Manage feeding tubes, IV therapy, blood products, and central lines.
  • Use EPIC electronic charting for accurate documentation.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with at least 2 years of Med Surg/Telemetry experience.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Proficient in medical-surgical and telemetry nursing, including dysrhythmia interpretation.
  • Experience with oncology-specific procedures (chemotherapy, brachytherapy).
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy certification preferred.

Work Schedule

  • 12-hour rotating day/night shifts (days, nights, or combination based on unit needs).
  • Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks; changes not guaranteed.
  • Staffing ratios typically 1:4, may adjust to 1:5.
  • Variable weekends based on unit needs.
  • Self-scheduling accommodated to balance preferences and unit requirements.
  • Orientation: Week 1 is Monday-Friday day shift; Week 2 includes 36 hours on-unit with preceptor.

Required Certifications & Competencies

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA provider or instructor accepted.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam within 1 year of start and annually thereafter.
  • Unit-specific competency exams.
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam prior to start.
  • State nursing license verification within 30 days of start.
  • Oncology-specific certifications preferred (e.g., ONS Chemotherapy).

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting.
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring.
  • Education accreditation verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, NLN CNEA, or CASN).
  • Pending background check attestation allowed if fingerprint results are pending.
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed).
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap (adult dose)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • TB questionnaire
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccines or positive titers
    • Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Varicella vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but recommended.

Facility Policies & Documentation

  • Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment required.
  • Confidential Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training and reporting compliance required annually.
  • Ethics and compliance policies must be reviewed and acknowledged annually.
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required annually.

References & History

  • Two professional references required; at least one from a manager or formal leader.
  • Employment application and skills checklist required.
