Emergency Room RN Travel Assignment

Location & Facility

  • Trauma Level: Level 3
  • Unit: Emergency Care Center (ECC) / Emergency Room (ER)
  • Unit Beds: 29 bed ED, 4 bed Behavioral Health (BDU), 7 bed Fast Track (FT) (all beds can swing to ER beds)
  • Facility Beds: 341
  • Non-teaching facility and hospital

Contract Length

  • 16 weeks (approximately 4 months)
  • Assignment can be up to 32 weeks

Experience & Certification Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year clinical experience overall
  • Minimum 1 year clinical experience in Emergency Room specialty
  • Certifications required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) — must be active or proof of class prior to start
    • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) — required prior to starting
  • Prior travel experience preferred but not required
  • Charge nurse experience preferred
  • NY nursing license required or proof of application with applied date (NY licensing takes 6-8 weeks)

Work Environment & Unit Details

  • Nurse to patient ratio: typically 1:5, sometimes higher depending on volume; must be comfortable working with ratios higher than 1:4 in a busy community setting
  • Ancillary staff support:
    • CNA/PCT available (7a-11p x3, 11p-3a x3, 3a-7a x2; float added 11a-7p)
    • Unit clerk/secretary (1 per shift)
    • Crisis clinicians (7a-11p)
    • Advanced Practice Providers (3 staggered shifts from 8a-11p)
  • Orientation: 20 hours for short contracts, 24 hours for 13-week contracts
  • Documentation system: EPIC (experience within past 2 years required)
  • Medication system: Pyxis
  • Floating: Not required
  • Charge nurse duties: Required
  • Scheduling: Rotating shifts, no blocked scheduling, self-scheduling not available
  • Shift hours:
    • 7a-7p
    • 7p-7a
    • 11a-11p
    • 3p-3a (ER RN shift specifically 3p-3a)
  • Weekend requirements: Yes (minimum every other weekend or adjusted schedule)
  • Holiday requirements: Yes (travelers must work 2 out of 3 major holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas/Christmas Eve, New Year’s Day/Eve)
  • Call requirements: No

Patient Population

  • Adult and pediatric patients
  • Age range: neonate to geriatric
  • Patient types may include boarded patients, psychiatric patients, COVID patients, medical/surgical, long-term care, and psychiatric boarders
  • Critical care ICU patients are quickly transferred to ICU

Unit Specific Procedures & Equipment

  • Nurse manages drips (prepared by pharmacy 24/7)
  • CA II staff trained to straight stick for labs; nurses can also straight stick or draw from IV
  • Nurses start their own IVs (IV therapy assistance available certain hours)
  • Nurses perform their own EKGs (CA II can assist)
  • Nurses administer their own respiratory treatments
  • Respiratory and anesthesia support available 24/7
  • Ventilators managed by respiratory therapists
  • Equipment includes Phillips MP40 monitors, Alaris IV pumps

Dress Code & Professional Standards

  • Scrubs: Navy blue and white
  • Shoes: Closed toe required
  • Jewelry: Not specified
  • Hair/Beard: Clean shaven
  • Nail polish: No artificial nails allowed
  • Strict no use of cell phones or earbuds while working

Additional Notes

  • Public transportation is not accessible; reliable personal or rental vehicle strongly recommended
  • Vehicles should have all-season or snow tires November through April
  • Must provide complete work history including bed count, EMR, and facility type
  • Employment gaps over 90 days must be explained

This position is ideal for Emergency Room RNs comfortable with a fast-paced, busy community hospital setting, who have recent EPIC experience and required certifications, and are willing to work rotating shifts including weekends and holidays without call responsibilities.
