Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical) - Travel/Contract

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Specialty: Registered Nurse

Contract Length: 13 weeks


Shift & Scheduling Details

  • Shift: 3x12 hour night shifts (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
  • Charting system: EPIC (experience required)
  • Charge nurse and precepting experience required
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Holiday requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
  • Call-off policy: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Accepts first-time travelers and local candidates (radius rule applies)
  • Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license required

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC as applicable by unit
  • State License primary source verification within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification required for all RNs
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., CPI for Behavioral Health)

Clinical Skills & Unit Details

  • Proficient in Medical/Surgical care with experience responding to Rapid Response/Code teams
  • Skilled in peripheral line care/management, nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, oxygen administration, and isolation precautions
  • Patient ratio: 1:6
  • Adult acute care unit caring for patients with elective back surgeries, trauma, prostate cancer, gallbladders, cellulitis
  • Floating within skillset required
  • May be required to work as charge nurse and precept new staff

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • I9 or attestation required
  • Valid Driver’s License/State ID with address within 100 miles of facility required
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Background check: 7-year history, including all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification of highest earned degree required
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, free from communicable diseases
  • Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually (not required for students)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Required immunizations or positive titers: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • References: 2 clinical references required
  • Employment application/resume required
  • Skills checklist updated annually

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must review and acknowledge the facility’s orientation manual prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)
  • Photo for badge required (professional picture with plain background)
  • Some units may require additional certifications or competencies based on specialty or department
  • Candidates must comply with facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements within 48 hours of signing

This position is suitable for experienced Med/Surg RNs comfortable with night shifts, charge responsibilities, and working in a Level I Trauma Center environment. First-time travelers and local candidates are welcome, with specific licensing and documentation requirements.
