Job Opportunity: Labor & Delivery RN - Women and Children’s Unit

Facility Overview

  • Unit: Women and Children’s Unit
  • Specialty: Labor and Delivery, Newborn, Postpartum, LDRP
  • Unit Beds: 7 inpatient beds, 3 triage rooms
  • Annual Deliveries: Approximately 300 per year
  • Facility Beds: 88 inpatient beds
  • Teaching Facility: No
  • Teaching Hospital Experience Required: No

Contract Length

  • Duration: 16 weeks (approximately 4 months)
  • Assignment Length: Up to 32 weeks possible

Experience & Certification Requirements

  • Prior Travel Experience: Required
  • Clinical Experience: Minimum 1 year in Labor & Delivery and LDRP experience
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • Certifications Preferred:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) or PEARS (Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization)
    • STABLE certification preferred
  • EMR Experience: Epic experience within the past 2 years is required and non-negotiable

Patient Care & Unit Details

  • Nurse to Patient Ratio:
    • Active Labor or on Pitocin: 1:1
    • Couplets: 2 or 3 patients (4 or 6 total depending on census/acuity)
  • Ancillary Staff: CNA/PCT support available, typically 3 LNA’s/Perinatal Techs per shift (not always on every shift)
  • Orientation: Typically 3 shifts of 12 hours each
  • Patient Population: Labor, Delivery, Newborn, Postpartum, occasional Med/Surg overflow and triage
  • Age Range: All ages
  • Patient Care Modality: LDRP with some Med/Surg overflow
  • Documentation System: Epic, Philips Intellispace
  • Medication System: Pyxis
  • Floating: Required as helping hands only, no full assignments on other units
  • Charge Nurse: Not required (some travelers may orient to charge after first assignment)

Scheduling & Shifts

  • Shift Hours: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM and 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
  • Rotation Schedule: Every 2 weeks
  • Weekend Requirements: Every other weekend
  • Call Requirements: Yes, 2 twelve-hour call shifts in a rolling 4-week timeframe
  • Holiday Requirements: Must work 2 out of 4 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Day)
  • Scheduling System: Via “When to Work” application
  • Self-Scheduling: No
  • Block Schedules: Not allowed

Unit Specific Procedures & Equipment

  • Procedures:
    • IV starts
    • Lab draws (occasionally)
    • PACU post C-section care
    • Eat Sleep Console for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS)
    • Removal of epidural catheters
  • Special Equipment:
    • Electronic Fetal Monitors
    • Smart Pumps
    • Mindray cardiac monitors
  • Respiratory Support: Available 24/7
  • Anesthesia Support: Available 24/7 but not always in-house
  • Ventilator Management: Respiratory Therapy team

Additional Information

  • RNs must be independent in LDRP care and experienced in a community hospital setting without onsite NICU resources.
  • Experience as a baby nurse at delivery is required, including participation in neonatal resuscitations, assigning APGAR scores, and administering newborn medications post-delivery.
  • Facility requires complete work history including bed count, EMR, and facility type for submission.
  • Public transportation is not accessible; reliable personal or rental vehicle transportation is strongly recommended. Vehicles should have all-season or snow tires from November through April.
  • Dress Code: Light blue scrubs (provided), closed-toe shoes, nails trimmed and polish not chipped, jewelry removed in OR, no hair/beard code.

This position is ideal for experienced Labor & Delivery nurses with travel experience who are comfortable working in a community hospital environment with a focus on LDRP care and newborn support.
