Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: West Islip, New York
Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN)
Unit: Emergency Department (ED) / Admissions Unit
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Details

• Shift options: 3x12-hour shifts or 4x12-hour shifts
• Hospital size: 437-bed teaching hospital
• Experience required: Minimum 2 years with permanent RN license
• First-time travelers and local candidates accepted
• Patient ratios can be up to 1:8; candidates should be comfortable with this
• Uniform: Scrubs (all white, all navy, or a combination)
• Footwear: Croc-type shoes with holes are NOT allowed
• COVID-19 vaccine is required

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA only
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – Required for all ER RN positions, AHA only

Required Competencies

• Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (minimum score 80%)
• Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (minimum score 80%) – may be required depending on unit

Required Documentation & Compliance

• Driver’s license or state ID with clear picture and address
• 7-year background check including:

  • SS Trace
  • County search
  • National Sex Offender Registry
  • National Criminal Background
  • FACIS Level 3
  • OFAC
  • OMIG (NY Medicaid exclusions)
  • OIG and SAM
• EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days prior to start
• Education verification: diploma or transcript acceptable
• State license verification required within 30 days of start (no license hits accepted)
• Facility-specific forms including AUP and Physical Examination Form (must be completed by a physician within 30 days of start)
• Physical exam must be done on facility-specific form, signed by clinician, and cannot be completed onsite
• Fit test for N95 mask (Halyard Fluidshield or 3M 1860) within 12 months of start
• Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year of start
• Immunizations/vaccinations required with proof or titers:

  • Rubeola (Measles)
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Hepatitis B (antibody and antigen results required)
  • Varicella
• Standard 9-panel drug screen within 30 days prior to start (no rapid tests)
• Seasonal flu vaccination required October 1 - April 30 (declinations allowed for religious or medical reasons)
• COVID vaccination preferred (initial series)

Additional Requirements

• Two clinical references required (supervisor level or above; charge RNs acceptable)
• Employment history covering 7 years with explanations for any gaps
• At least 1 year of experience in specialty or comparable/higher acuity area
• Current skills checklist applicable to the position (within last year)
• New York State Medicaid Exclusion List check updated annually

• Candidate must be pre-closed before start
• This is a travel/contract position with Catholic Health Services of Long Island system
