Job Opportunity: Histology Technician (Laboratory)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 6 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Histology Technician
  • Shift: Days, Monday to Friday, 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM with holiday rotation
  • Weekend Requirement: Occasional weekends
  • On-call: No
  • Floating: Not required
  • Worksite: On-site at hospital campus

Experience & Skills Required

  • 3-5 years of full-time experience
  • Proficient in embedding and microtomy skills
  • First-time travelers accepted

Certifications & Licensure Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC)
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in histotechnology, biology, or related scientific discipline, QIHC

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and complex histologic procedures including processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special stains, and immunohistochemistry
  • Conduct quality control on completed slides
  • Identify problems affecting diagnosis and results
  • Record observations and document maintenance of lab instruments and equipment
  • Comply with established laboratory policies and procedures

  • Parking: Paid parking nights and weekends only

Important Notes

  • Radius rule: 60 miles
  • Locals may be accepted on a case-by-case basis
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Hurricane season (June-November) may require emergency response team participation

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Proof of work eligibility (I-9 attestation and form)
  • Copy of Driver’s License/State ID
  • Copy of Social Security Card or SSN verification
  • Background checks including SSN trace, criminal, sex offender registry, FACIS, and international searches if applicable
  • Education verification or diploma/transcripts as placeholder
  • State license verification (active, unencumbered) with primary source verification
  • NURSYS verification for applicable licenses
  • Drug screening (10-panel urine test within 90 days)
  • Physical exam updated annually, attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers: Tdap, MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B, TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season
  • COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Competency exams and color blindness test prior to start
  • Facility-specific orientation modules and first day instructions must be completed before orientation
  • Passport-style photo for badge required before start

Additional Certifications (If Applicable)

  • ACLS, PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM certifications as required by specific units or roles
  • IV Therapy certification for select LPNs if applicable
  • Radiation badge if required by unit

References & Employment History

  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Complete employment application including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
  • Verification of last 3 clinical employers
