Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – General Medicine PCU

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Shift Hours:
    • 3x12 hour night shifts (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
    • 4x12 hour shifts available upon request
  • Weekend Requirement:
    • Every other weekend (EOW) or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Holiday Requirement:
    • Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
    • Christmas time off requests cannot be approved
  • Call Off Policy:
    • Facility allows 1 call off shift per 2 weeks
  • Charting System: EPIC experience required
  • Accepts First-Time Travelers: Yes
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, with radius rule applied
  • Pending License Accepted: Yes, if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license required

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation/management
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
  • Medication administration including cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management, trach care
  • Ventilator care for chronic trach and vent patients
  • Rapid Response and Code team activation
  • Isolation precautions and telemetry settings across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units

Unit Details and Floating

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:5 (goal 1:4)
  • Hybrid unit: 10 PCU beds and 2 ICU beds
  • Patient population includes vent/trach dependent patients
  • Common diagnoses: DKA, COPD, Sepsis, Suicide/Overdose, Chronic respiratory failure, renal failure
  • 2 beds dedicated for chronic trach patients
  • Remote telemetry with monitors on unit; tele-sitting to increase Patient Care Tech coverage
  • Floating required within skillset

Important Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • I9 or attestation required
  • Driver’s License/State ID required within 48 hours of signing; must meet radius rule (within 100 miles)
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Background check: 7-year history required within 1 year of start; must cover all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • Education verification of highest earned degree required
  • State license primary source verification within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification required for all RNs within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, free from communicable diseases
  • Fit test within 1 year of start, updated annually (not required for students)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Required immunizations or positive titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • 2 clinical references required
  • Complete application/resume required
  • Skills checklist updated annually
  • Photo for badge required (professional, plain background)
  • Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment required (HIPAA compliance)

Notes

  • Candidates must be prepared to float within their skillset
  • Must work at least one holiday during the contract
  • Christmas time off requests are not approved
  • First-time travelers are welcome
  • Locals accepted if within radius criteria
  • Pending licenses accepted under specific conditions

This position is ideal for RNs with experience in progressive care units, telemetry, and ventilator/trach care who are comfortable working night shifts and meeting holiday and weekend requirements.
