Registered Nurse - Pediatric Medical ICU (Travel/Contract)
Location: Boston, Massachusetts
Facility Type: Acute Care, Magnet, Level I Trauma, NICU Level III/IV
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Pediatric Medical ICU
- Experience Required: Minimum 2 years Pediatric ICU experience including ventilator management
- First-timers accepted: Yes
- Certifications Required: BLS, PALS
- On-call Required: No
- Floating: Yes, within scope to CICU, MSICU, NICU
- Shift Rotation: 50/50 Day/Night rotation, every other weekend
- Locals Accepted: Yes (within 50 miles)
- Charting System: EPIC
- Scrub Color: Any solid color for all units; OR provided; SPT any color (not provided)
- Parking: Discounted off-site and onsite parking; free parking for night shift
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support): AHA or American Red Cross only, required for all clinical/allied positions except Central Sterile Tech
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): AHA or American Red Cross only, required for Pediatric ICU and related units
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Required for Cardiovascular Pediatric Intensive Care and CICU if assignment extends past 13 weeks
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program): Preferred for NICU, must have PALS or NRP
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., Chemo for Oncology, EFM for L&D)
Experience & Competencies
- Pediatric ICU experience with ventilator management required
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required for all RNs and LPNs (not required for APNs)
- Competency exam required (not required for APNs)
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 10-year criminal background check within 6 months prior to start, including aliases and multiple federal/state databases
- Massachusetts Statewide iCORI clearance required within 6 months of start
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required
- Background checks must be started within 24 hours of booking and updated annually for direct candidates
- Additional facility-specific background check consents and fingerprinting may be required for Behavioral Health/Psych positions
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, cleared to work with no restrictions
- Immunizations and proof required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (Tdap after age 11 acceptable, no declinations)
- Negative TB test (T-Spot or 2-step skin test) within required timeframes
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): Proof of 2 MMR vaccinations or positive titers
- Hepatitis B: Must meet one of the accepted documentation options (series + titer, declination, etc.)
- Varicella: Proof of 2 vaccinations or positive titer
- Drug testing: 9-panel drug screen within last 12 months (not required for APNs)
- Seasonal vaccinations:
- Flu vaccine required annually (or approved medical/religious exemption) with strict deadlines
- COVID vaccine highly preferred; proof or exemption required with deadlines
- Respiratory Safety clearance required for all travelers; facility-specific fit testing done onsite
Documentation & Onboarding
- Proof of name change if applicable
- State license verification through MA.gov within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification within 30 days of start
- Verification of professional certifications within 30 days of start
- Employment application with 10-year work history; explanations required for gaps over 30 days
- Two professional references from two separate employers within last 3 jobs
- Skills checklist specific to unit within 1 year prior to start
- Facility-specific onboarding packet to be completed 2 weeks prior to start
- Various facility-specific forms related to health requirements, background checks, and vaccine exemptions must be completed and submitted on time
Additional Notes
- Floating within pediatric critical care units is expected
- 50/50 day/night shifts with every other weekend rotation; permanent day or night shifts considered with increased weekend coverage
- Parking accommodations available with discounts and free parking for night shifts
- EPIC charting system used across units
