Job Details

• Contract Length: 32 weeks
• Shift Hours: 12-hour shifts with option to pick up extra 8-hour shifts
• Scheduling: Online system ("when-to-work"), schedules published in advance
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: Must work 2 out of 4 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Day)
• Floating: Required but infrequent, floats to like units
• Call: No
• Charge Nurse: Not required

Experience & Certification Requirements

• Minimum Clinical Experience: 5 years med-surg telemetry experience OR 3 years telemetry experience
• Prior Travel Experience: Required
• Travel Assignments: Must have completed 2 travel assignments in 300+ bed facilities OR previous experience at any UVMHN acute care facility
• EMR Experience: EPIC experience within the past 2 years required (non-negotiable)
• Certifications Required:

  • AHA BLS
  • AHA ACLS
  • NIHSS (must be completed prior to starting)
  • Telemetry Certification preferred

Unit & Patient Care Information

• Patient Population: Adult patients with telemetry needs including post-op ortho, urology, GI, COPD, CHF, diabetes, end-of-life care, dementia, and placement needs
• Excludes: Psych, ICU, Women & Children’s units
• Nurse-Patient Ratio:

  • Days: 3-5 patients per nurse
  • Nights: 4-6 patients per nurse
• Ancillary Support:

  • CNA/PCT (LNAs) assigned at 1:8-10 ratio
  • Unit Secretary available 6am-10pm most days
  • Charge nurse available 24/7 without patient assignment
• Respiratory and Anesthesia support available 24/7
• Ventilator management by Respiratory Therapists

Unit Procedures & Equipment

• Bedside RN responsibilities include:

  • NG tube insertion
  • Peripheral IV insertion
  • Telemetry strip application, interpretation, and response
• Special Equipment:

  • Sigma IV pumps
  • CAAD PCA pumps
  • Kangaroo tube feed pumps
  • GE EKG machines
  • Stryker beds
  • Mindray cardiac monitors
  • Hill-Rom nurse call system

Orientation & Training

• Orientation: 1-2 precepted shifts plus time with educators before patient care
• Specialty Testing: Not required
• Documentation System: EPIC
• Medication System: Pyxis

Work Environment & Dress Code

• Team-oriented unit with collaboration among RNs, LPNs, and LNAs
• Dress Code:

  • Scrubs (own or provided), professional appearance required
  • Closed-toe, non-skid shoes
  • Minimal jewelry
  • Groomed hair/beard
  • No artificial nails
• Parking: Free onsite
• Reliable personal vehicle strongly recommended due to limited public transportation and housing options up to 15 minutes away
• Vehicles should have all-season or snow tires November through April

This position is ideal for experienced telemetry nurses who enjoy a collaborative team environment and are comfortable with acute med-surg patient care requiring telemetry skills.
