Job Summary

The Pathologist's Assistant provides services in Anatomic Pathology as part of a team under the supervision of a qualified Pathologist. Responsibilities include assisting in human post-mortem examinations and surgical specimen processing.


Essential Functions

  • Assist in preparation and performance of human surgical specimen examinations, including gross description, dissection, and selection of tissue sections for microscopic examination (frozen and permanent sections).
  • Accession specimens and ensure proper identification according to surgical pathology policies. Prepare containers and tissue cassettes.
  • Support resident training and credentialing by providing technical guidance and assessing competency in specimen handling.
  • Perform gross photography of specimens and maintain related files.
  • Responsible for tumor procurement for biorepository, documentation, quality assurance, and business transactions.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality control, focusing on specimen identification, frozen sections, and maintenance of instruments and refrigerators.
  • Manage inventory and ordering of supplies for frozen section room and surgical pathology lab.
  • Select gross tissue and extremities for disposal after final reports.
  • Perform autopsies including external examination, organ inspection, evisceration, dissection, tissue submission, and documentation of findings.
  • Assist with other related duties as assigned or as time permits.
