Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Specialty: Registered Nurse
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: 2S Med Rehab
  • Shift: 3x12 hour shifts, 7pm-7am, weekdays, every other weekend, float
  • Unit Description:
    • 24 beds
    • Patient population includes cerebrovascular disease, traumatic brain injury (TBI), amputees, spinal cord injuries (SCI), deconditioning, neurological diseases
  • Care Team: Physiatrist, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse, 2 Therapists (varies), Social Worker
  • Therapy: Patients receive 3 hours of therapy daily, Monday-Friday
  • Length of Stay: Approximately 2 weeks
  • Orientation: Held every other week on Thursday
  • Patient Diagnoses: SCI, TBI, Stroke, Amputation, Neuromuscular diseases, Severe deconditioning related to cardiac or respiratory events

Requirements

  • Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years RN experience
    • At least 1 year in specialty experience required
    • Charge nurse experience preferred
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (AHA required)
    • Acute care rehab preferred
  • Licensure:
    • WV or Compact RN license required
    • Pending license can be submitted but must be active before start
  • Other:
    • First-time travelers accepted
    • Every other weekend required
    • No call requirement
    • RN may float within scope as needed
    • Open to block schedule requests (discuss during interview)
    • Must be within 100-mile radius (75-99 miles requires facility approval)
    • Guaranteed hours options: 36 or 48 hours/week (discuss with manager)

Staffing Ratios

  • Day shift: 1 nurse to 4-5 patients
  • Night shift: 1 nurse to 5-6 patients

Compliance & Submission Requirements

  • Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent day worked
  • Flu shot required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless medically exempt with documentation
  • COVID-19 vaccine NOT required
  • Required documents for submission:
    • Candidate profile/work history
    • Specialty-specific skills checklist
    • Minimum 2 manager/charge nurse references (within past 2 years)
    • RN license verification (NURSYS within 2 days of submission)
    • Valid driver’s license
    • Social Security card
  • Background checks required within 30 days of start, including 7-year criminal background, SSN trace, sex offender search, and others
  • Pass/fail testing required for nursing candidates (EKG, medication calculation, blood administration)

Orientation & Training

  • Orientation is two days (Thursday and Friday)
  • Includes Cerner Infusion Management
  • Inservice training modules must be completed 1 week prior to start (approx. 4 hours)
  • Pass/fail testing is part of inservice training
  • Candidates must review facility policies including blood administration, dress code, math calculation for medication administration, and EKG review (as applicable)

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year, signed by appropriate healthcare provider, confirming good health and no limitations
  • Annual fit mask testing (N95) required; onsite fit testing may be accommodated if no clinic within 100 miles
  • Tdap vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions accepted with approval)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers required
  • Hepatitis B vaccination or documented immunity required
  • Varicella vaccination or positive titers required
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a comprehensive panel
  • Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • COVID-19 vaccination is optional; proof or declination accepted

References & Skills

  • At least 1 reference required from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse within 1 year of start
  • Annual specialty skills checklist required, demonstrating true skills

Additional Notes

  • No return-to-office restrictions, but requests must be included in application and discussed during interview
  • Candidates with latex allergy should notify manager to avoid exposure
  • PAPR accommodations available if unable to pass fit testing due to facial hair or face shape
