Description

Telemetry Nurse - 2 South Unit

Location: Martinsburg, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Facility Information

  • 2nd Floor telemetry unit with 20 private beds
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5-6 (day and night shifts)
  • EMR system: EPIC
  • Charge Nurse: Varies daily; may float between 2nd & 6th floors or assigned per floor with full patient load
  • Nurse Aides: Typically 3 PCTs per floor when fully staffed; sometimes only 1 PCT
  • Telemetry monitors: Phillips Cardiac Monitors with central monitoring station; data flows directly into EPIC
  • Drips managed per protocol: Cardizem, Amiodarone, Labetolol, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Heparin, Integrilin, Nitro
  • Ventilators: Bipap, Cpap, High Flow managed by Respiratory Therapy (RT)
  • RT coverage: In-house 24/7
  • Hospitalist coverage: In-house 24/7
  • Pharmacy: In-house 24/7, Omnicell on unit during the day

Schedule & Shifts

  • 12-hour shifts: 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM (day or night)
  • Scheduling via Kronos with requests submitted at least 2 weeks in advance for 4-week blocks
  • Block scheduling may be allowed if included in contract
  • Weekend rotation required
  • Holiday shifts assigned based on unit needs; travelers may be scheduled on holidays
  • Floating to ICU overflow or Ortho/MedSurg as needed

Orientation & Experience

  • Floor-specific orientation: 1-2 days depending on experience
  • Open to first-time travelers

Patient Population & Care

  • Common diagnoses: Elevated troponin (no titration), no DKA, no vents, active chest pain, pre/post cardiac cath (with or without intervention), post-STEMI recovery (after ICU), NSTEMI, peritoneal dialysis (training provided), pacemakers, occasional post-surgical (hip if ortho full or cardiac issues), oncology patients (if unit full)
  • Full-time night shift option: 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM, every other weekend and holiday rotation

Certifications & Requirements

  • Required: BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA)
  • Scrub color: Navy blue scrubs or white jacket; undershirt white or navy
  • Hair must be natural color (no pink, purple, blue)
  • Distasteful tattoos must be covered

Additional Notes

  • Nurses perform telemetry strip reading every 4 hours and document rhythm and review in patient chart
  • No dedicated IV team; nurses manage IV drips per protocol
  • Travel team submissions limited to 2 candidates per opening
  • Background checks must be disclosed at time of submission
  • Drivers license address must be outside 50 miles from facility
  • Previous permanent candidates must have been gone for 2 years before reapplying
  • Previous travelers must have been gone for 2 years after 1 full year assignment
