Job Description

  • Must be flexible with weekend requirements; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
  • Refusal to float may result in contract termination.
  • Teaching facility: travel nurses may be required to precept or have students shadow them.
  • First-time travelers accepted; local candidates not accepted.
  • Call-in shifts must be made up during the pay period or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
  • Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources provided.
  • Floating may be required to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) at University and Methodist Hospitals.
  • Staffing ratios typically 1:3-4, rarely 1:5 during emergencies.
  • Unit patient population includes CVAs, hydrocephalus, brain tumors/resections, seizures, TBIs, trauma cases (shootings, stabbings, MVCs), GI surgeries, and large wound care.

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BCLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Certification

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 2 years nursing experience
  • Telemetry experience
  • Proficient in neuro nursing
  • Management of drips
  • Preferred: Conscious sedation and Level 1 trauma experience

Important Notes

  • IU Health will not allow Indiana RNs to work at their facilities effective 11/30/2024, except for Periop/OR RNs, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).
  • Refusal to float or meet weekend requirements may lead to contract termination.

  • Patient care includes neurological and trauma cases, GI surgeries, and wound care.

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

Background Checks

  • Must include 7 years of residence/work history
  • SSN Trace, County Criminal, Statewide, National Sex Offender, FACIS Level III
  • Education verification required for new travelers
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start

Certifications Verification

  • ACLS, BLS, PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM as applicable
  • State nursing license verification within 30 days before start
  • NIH Stroke Certification required

Health Documents

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific respirators approved)
  • Immunizations and titers required or strongly recommended:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
    • Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Seasonal Flu vaccination/documentation required for flu season (9/30 - 3/31); no declinations accepted
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months

Competency Exams

  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required
  • Unit competency exam required
  • Color blind testing (Ishihara or equivalent) required

Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Completion of facility-specific forms and orientation packets prior to start
  • Mandatory completion of 22 RRT modules for Respiratory Therapists (if applicable)
  • HIPAA and confidentiality agreements required

Employment History and References

  • Minimum 2 references from recent employment within 2 years
  • Employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps of 30+ days
  • Skills checklist within 12 months, updated annually

This position requires a flexible, experienced RN comfortable with neurological and trauma patient care in a teaching hospital setting, with multiple certifications and compliance documents up to date.
