Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Facility Type: Level IV Trauma Center, Major Teaching Hospital
Unit: 5 South Medical Surgical/Oncology (29 Bed Unit)
Patient Population: Adult medical and surgical patients, oncology, palliative care, urology, telemetry


Job Details

  • Shift: 3x12 hour shifts, 7am-7pm, weekdays, every other weekend required
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Patient Ratios:
    • Days: 4-5 patients per nurse
    • Nights: 5-6 patients per nurse
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (AHA only, no pending certs allowed)
    • ONCC/ONS (Oncology Nursing Certification preferred)
  • Preferred Skills:
    • Telemetry
    • Central Line Draws, Ports
    • Blood Administration
    • PCA Pumps
    • Bone Marrow Aspiration Assist
    • Pleurx Chest Tubes
    • Chemotherapy Administration (preferred but not required)
  • Float: Nurses may float within their scope to meet facility needs
  • Schedule: Open to accommodating blocked schedule requests
  • License: WV or Compact RN License required (pending license may be submitted)
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours minimum
  • Holiday Requests: Limit to no more than 1 of the 3 major holidays
  • Flu Vaccine: Required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless medically exempt
  • COVID-19 Vaccine: Not required

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Social Security Card (or proof of request)
  • Residency Declaration Form (if working on compact license)
  • 7-year Criminal Background Check (within 30 days of start)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and National Sex Offender Registry checks (updated annually)
  • Primary Source Verification of State License and NURSYS verification (within 30 days of start)
  • Physical Exam (within 1 year, must state candidate is in good health and free from communicable diseases)
  • Drug Screen (within 30 days, no placeholders allowed)
  • Negative TB test or Chest X-Ray (within 3 months)
  • Annual TB Questionnaire for positive TB responders
  • Immunizations:
    • Tdap (required, no declinations accepted; medical/religious exemptions allowed)
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella (2 vaccines or positive titers required)
    • Hepatitis B (series or declination with documentation)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titers required)
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • Fit Mask Testing (annual; 3M N95 1860 Small/Regular or Aura 9205 only)
  • Pass/Fail Testing (EKG, Medication Calculation, Blood Administration) required for nursing candidates
  • Annual Skills Checklist for specialty (Medical Surgical/Telemetry skills checklist required)
  • References: Minimum 1 from manager, supervisor, or charge nurse within past year

Orientation & Training

  • Orientation is 2 days (Thursday and Friday) including Cerner Infusion Management
  • Required to complete in-service training modules prior to start (approx. 4 hours)
  • Review of facility-specific policies including Blood Administration, Dress Code, Math Calculation Packet, and EKG Review
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification required for certain units (not specifically for this unit)

Additional Notes

  • Candidates without oncology experience will be considered if strong in other areas
  • Candidates must comply with facility policies and submit all required documentation before start
  • Returning permanent employees must wait 2 years before returning as travelers
  • Facility accommodates PAPR if candidate cannot pass fit testing due to facial hair or other reasons
