Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Facility Type: Teaching hospital (Surgical PCU with near ICU-level acuity)

Work Schedule & Expectations
- Travelers expected to work every other weekend; consecutive weekends may be required based on operational needs
- Call-in shifts must be made up during the pay period or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status
- Floating to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may be required; refusal to float may result in contract termination
- Possible charge nurse responsibilities with training and resources provided
Unit Information
- Surgical Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with high acuity, including ENT, Thoracic, General Surgery, Urology, and Medical overflow patients
- Staffing ratios typically 1:3-4
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only, RQI acceptable
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only, RQI acceptable
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 2 years nursing experience
- Proficient in cardiac monitoring (on-unit monitoring)
- Management of chest tubes, fresh tracheostomies, feeding tubes
- Post-operative patient care
- Epidural management
- Management of non-titratable cardiac drips
- IV insulin protocols and titration of insulin drips
- External BiPAP/CPAP management
- Total laryngectomy care
- Doppler flap checks
Facility & Job Requirements
- Agreement to precept and/or have students shadow during assignment (due to teaching hospital status)
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy required)
- Background checks including 7-year history, education verification, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
- Education verification and official transcripts/diplomas required
- Medication and unit competency exams required
- Color blindness testing (Ishihara or equivalent) required
- Physical exam within 12 months of start date
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required)
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or 2 vaccines, no exemptions)
- Varicella (positive titer or 2 vaccines, no exemptions)
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (strongly recommended)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
- Flu vaccination/documentation required for flu season (no declinations accepted)
- TB testing within 1 year (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-SPOT) with follow-up if positive
- References: Minimum 2 from recent employment with supervisory titles
- Current employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps
- Skills checklist within 12 months and annually thereafter
Important Notes
- Effective 11/30/2024, Indiana RNs are generally not allowed to work at this facility except for Perioperative/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS)
- On-site PAPR is automatically approved at Methodist and University hospitals
- Completion of mandatory orientation modules and facility-specific paperwork is required prior to start
- Failure to complete required modules or paperwork may delay or cancel orientation/start date
This position is ideal for experienced travel RNs comfortable with high-acuity surgical progressive care, flexible with floating, and willing to engage in a teaching environment.
