Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN)
Unit: Cardiac ICU (23 beds) - ranked #5 nationally and #1 in Midwest (USNWR)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: 3x12-hour or 4x12-hour shifts, every other weekend required
- Float: Required between cardiac stepdown unit and PICU
- Experience: Minimum 2 years required
- Staffing Ratios: 1:1 to 1:2
- Patient Population: Complex heart patients, VAD patients, heart transplant program
- Training: Will accept PICU RNs and provide training on CVPICU
- Locals: Not accepted (travelers only)
- License: Indiana RN license and certifications must be in hand to submit
- Effective 11/30/24: Indiana RNs generally not allowed to work at these facilities except Periop/OR RN’s, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS)
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only, RQI acceptable
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA only, RQI acceptable
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only, RQI acceptable
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA only
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., CHEMO, TNCC, EFM)

Minimum Experience
- 2 years in relevant specialty
Background and Compliance Requirements
- Background check within 90 days of start, including 7-year history and international search if applicable
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
- Education verification by third party
- Online license verification within 30 days of start
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required
- Unit competency exam required
- Color blindness testing (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score
- HIPAA and safety manual acknowledgements
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Immunizations or positive titers required for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella (no declinations accepted)
- Hepatitis B (series, titer, or signed declination)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap strongly recommended
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31)
Documentation and Forms
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
- Transcript or diploma (official, clear copy)
- Employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps over 30 days
- Minimum 2 professional references from recent employment (charge, manager, supervisor level)
- Skills checklist within 12 months, updated annually
- Facility-specific compliance and orientation forms must be completed prior to start
- Mandatory RRT modules for Respiratory Therapists (if applicable)
Additional Notes
- Float between cardiac stepdown and PICU required
- IU Health will not accept Indiana RN licenses after 11/30/24 except for certain specialties as noted
- On-site fit testing is limited and must be approved in advance
- Self-study orientation and testing required prior to start for some facilities
- Flu vaccine declinations are not accepted; exemptions must be approved by direct team lead
