Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Float position covering both Medical-Surgical (Med Surg) and Critical Care/ICU units.
  • Must be comfortable with the following patient ratios:
    • Med Surg: 4-6 patients per nurse
    • ICU: 2-3 patients per nurse
  • Float assignments:
    • Med Surg floats to various med-surg units (AU, OSU, GSU, NVU, CAR, GMU, AMU, EMCU)
    • Critical Care floats to TCU, CSU, MICU, NCCU, and med-surg units as needed
  • Orientation required during the first 2 weeks of assignment
  • 36 hours guaranteed per week with option to pick up additional shifts
  • Every other weekend required
  • Block scheduling is not guaranteed
  • Holiday time off restrictions apply (only one holiday day or one adjacent day off allowed)
  • Minimum 1 year nursing experience required; 1st year travelers considered
  • Certifications required: ACLS (AHA) & BCLS (AHA)

Required Certifications & Competencies

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
  • Other certifications as applicable based on unit assignment (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM)
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (within 1 year, passing score ≥ 80%)
  • Competency Exam in specialty (within 1 year, passing score ≥ 80%)
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including:
    • SSN Trace
    • National Criminal Search
    • National Sex Offender Search
    • Statewide searches
    • Education Verification
    • Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) search for Home Health
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Michigan-specific requirements:
    • MI LARA Fingerprint Results within 45 days of start (for certain positions)
    • Michigan Central Registry Clearance (required for pediatric, RRT, L&D, Echo Tech Cardiac Sonographers)
  • Education verification (copy of highest degree or diploma)
  • One professional reference from a supervisor or manager required
  • Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask test (Honeywell DC365N95HC) required onsite for certain roles
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (must include pertussis)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 45 days of start
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required
  • Hepatitis B: titer, series, or facility declination required
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required
  • 10-panel drug test including Marijuana/THC within 45 days of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/spiritual exemption required for candidates starting after November 1

Facility-Specific Policies

  • Review and sign Code of Conduct and Appearance Standards Policy prior to start
  • Hepatitis B declination form if declining vaccine or titer
  • Fit test appointment must be scheduled and completed by candidate before or on first day
  • Vaccine exemption forms require approval and should be submitted early

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • Float position with variable assignments across multiple units
  • Orientation mandatory first 2 weeks
  • 36 hours guaranteed weekly, with shift pick-up options
  • Every other weekend required
  • No guaranteed block schedule
