Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract) - Overland Park, Kansas

Position Details

  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
  • Ratios: 1:5 patient ratio
  • Experience Required: 1 to 2 years
  • First-time Travelers: Accepted
  • Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday/Saturday/Sunday combination)
  • Holiday Shifts & Charge RN Assignments: As needed
  • Float Pool Position: Yes, no home unit assigned. Floating between approximately 5 Med/Surg Intermediate/PCU units and other metro campuses as needed.
  • On-call: Not required
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility)
  • Pending License: Not accepted
  • Return to Office Restrictions: No more than 7 days
  • Guaranteed Hours: Minimum 3 shifts per 13 weeks (cancelled shifts must be regular shift length)

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Preferred Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)

Required Skills and Experience

  • Work settings: Med/Surg Telemetry, Telemetry, Cardiac Telemetry, Neuro Stepdown
  • Cardiac monitoring and emergency response: Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, telemetry monitoring on unit
  • Cardiovascular care: Pre/Post Cardiac Catheterization, Sepsis, Wound Care, Alcohol Use Disorder, Suicidal Ideation, Renal Failure, Atrial Fibrillation, Gastrointestinal Bleeding, Stroke, COVID-19 care

Preferred Skills

  • Cardiovascular: Sheath removal
  • Gastrointestinal: Feeding tube care and management
  • IV therapy/Phlebotomy: Accessing ports, blood product administration, central line care/management

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

Background Checks

  • Criminal background check within 6 months (7-year search including statewide and nationwide)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM quarterly checks
  • HHS/OIG quarterly checks
  • Education verification (highest nursing education)
  • State-specific searches as applicable (MO, IL)
  • Fingerprinting required for Illinois long-term care or rehab units

Certifications Verification

  • BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and other unit-specific certifications must be current and verifiable
  • NURSYS license verification required
  • IV Certification required for LPNs/LVNs in Missouri facilities
  • CPI or MAB certification if applicable

Competency Exams

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (80% pass rate required)
  • Unit-specific competency exams (e.g., Oncology if applicable)
  • Color blindness testing within 12 months

  • HIPAA Acknowledgement (annual)
  • Latex Allergy Questionnaire (annual)
  • Confidentiality Form (annual)
  • Regulatory Compliance Education (annual, 80% passing score)
  • Hepatitis B declination (annual)

Health Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask testing (N95) annually, with specific procedures for failed tests
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine or declination
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 12 months (2-step PPD or equivalent)
  • Immunity or vaccination documentation for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella
  • Drug testing within 1 year, must not expire during assignment
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season (Sept-April)
