Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - Nurse Navigator, Radiation Medicine
Location: Washington, District of Columbia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Start Date: December 15
Shifts: Rotating between 1:00 PM - 9:00 PM and 12:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Job Description
- Role: Nurse Navigator in Radiation Medicine
- Primary patient population: Cancer patients receiving radiation therapy
- Responsibilities include:
- Care and management of ports and central/implanted lines
- Starting IVs (adults)
- Managing acute conditions such as Tumor Lysis Syndrome, Anaphylaxis, Extravasation injury, Hemorrhage, Sepsis, Spinal Cord Compression, Neutropenic precautions
- Tracheostomy care/management
- Radiation therapy-related care including external radiation (teletherapy), radiation safety precautions, and assessment of radiation toxicity
- Wound care, managing altered mental status, constipation/diarrhea, dysphagia, edema, nausea/vomiting, neuropathy
- Patient education, skincare/wound care, and addressing social needs
- Telephone triage, chart preparation, disability forms, pharmacy calls
- Charting in Cerner electronic health record system
Required Qualifications
- Must have a District of Columbia RN license in hand to submit
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Experience as a nurse navigator or nurse coordinator preferred
- Oncology experience is a plus
- Must have completed at least 1 prior travel assignment (or screening if less)
- BLS certification required (AHA or ARC)
- Flu vaccine is mandatory for all employees at this facility
Skills Required
- Care and management of ports and central/implanted lines
- IV insertion (adults)
- Management of acute oncologic emergencies and complications
- Radiation oncology knowledge preferred
- Radiation safety and external radiation therapy care
- Wound care and symptom management related to radiation treatment
Certifications & Compliance
- BLS (Basic Life Support) required
- Other certifications may be required based on unit description (e.g., ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC)
- Background checks including criminal, education verification, and federal/state screenings required
- Drug screening within 90 days of start (excluding marijuana)
- Annual physical exam confirming ability to work without accommodations and free from communicable disease
- Immunizations and health documentation required:
- Flu vaccine (or approved exemption)
- COVID-19 vaccination strongly recommended (declination requires mask use)
- Tdap within 10 years preferred
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within required timeframe
- MMR, Hepatitis B, Varicella documentation or titers required
Additional Requirements
- Two positive supervisory references supporting at least two years of experience within the last three years
- Complete 7 years of work history with no gaps, including education and license information
- Competency exams including medication/pharmacology and EKG/dysrhythmia testing may be required depending on specialty/unit
- Facility-specific orientation modules and safety manual acknowledgment required prior to start
- Photo for badge and other onboarding documentation required
Work Environment
- Patients report Monday through Friday for radiation therapy
- Nurse Navigator provides ongoing care, education, and symptom assessment
- Collaboration with attending physicians, residents, and emergency services as needed
This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized oncology setting with a focus on radiation medicine, providing comprehensive nursing care to cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy.
