Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Facility Type: Teaching hospital with high-acuity Surgical PCU unit
Contract Length
- 13 weeks

Work Schedule & Expectations
- Call-ins:
- 0.9 FTE travelers must make up missed shifts within the pay period or at the end of the contract if unable.
- 1.2 FTE travelers will have call-in shifts added to the end of the contract.
- Weekends: Work every other weekend per contract; consecutive weekends may be required based on operational needs.
- Charge Nurse Coverage: May be required with training and resources provided.
- Floating: May be required to float to Med-Surg, PCU, ICU units. Refusal to float may result in contract termination.
- Staffing Ratios: 1 nurse to 3-4 patients.
Unit Information
- Surgical PCU with near ICU-level acuity
- Patient types include:
- ENT surgeries (Neck dissections, Mandibulectomy)
- Thoracic surgeries (Esophagectomy, Lobectomy, Pneumonectomy)
- General surgery (Pancreatic, Bowel, Liver resections)
- Urology (Urinary diversions, cystectomies, RPLND)
- Medical overflow patients
Required Certifications
- ACLS (AHA or RQI acceptable)
- BLS (AHA or RQI acceptable)
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 2 years nursing experience
- Proficient in:
- Cardiac monitoring (on-unit monitoring)
- Chest tube management
- Fresh tracheostomies
- Feeding tube care and management
- Post-operative patient care
- Epidural management
- Management of non-titratable cardiac drips
- IV insulin protocols and insulin drip titration
- External BiPAP/CPAP use
- Total laryngectomy care
- Doppler flap checks
Licensure & Background Requirements
- Valid RN license verified online within 30 days of start
- Background checks including 7-year history, SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, FACIS Level III, education verification
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific respirators required)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Immunizations or positive titers required for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella
- Hepatitis B (series, titer, or declination)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap strongly recommended
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for flu season (9/30 - 3/31)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
Competency & Orientation Requirements
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
- Unit competency exam
- Color blind testing (Ishihara or equivalent)
- Completion of facility-specific orientation and safety modules prior to start
- Agreement to possible precepting and student assignments during contract
Additional Notes
- IU Health will not allow Indiana RN travelers to work at their facilities after 11/30/2024 except for Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).
- Candidates must be willing to comply with all facility-specific policies and complete required documentation prior to start.
- Refusal to float or meet operational needs may result in contract termination.
This position offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity for experienced RNs comfortable with high-acuity surgical patients and flexible in floating across care levels within a teaching hospital environment.
