Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Neuro PCU)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Unit: Neuro Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
  • Shift: 3x12 hour shifts, 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM
    • 4x12 shifts available by request
    • Up to 52 weeks available by request
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract (no Christmas requested off)
  • Charting System: EPIC experience required
  • Call Off Policy: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Accepts First-Time Travelers: Yes
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, with radius rule applied
  • Pending License Accepted: Yes, if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license required

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring and emergency response (dysrhythmia interpretation/management, Rapid Response/Code teams)
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
  • Medication administration, cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support (nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management)
  • Rapid Response and isolation precautions

Unit Details and Floating

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4–5 (confirm comfort with 1:5 ratio)
  • Patient population: Adult patients with neurological conditions
  • Includes 5 dedicated beds for continuous 24-hour epilepsy monitoring
  • Care includes neurosurgical recovery, stroke management, neuro-specific diagnoses, and medical overflow
  • Floating required to units within clinical skillset

Documentation and Compliance Requirements

  • I9 or attestation required
  • Driver’s License/State ID required within 48 hours of signing (must meet radius criteria)
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Background check: 7-year history within 1 year of start, including all locations lived/worked
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification and transcript/diploma required
  • State license primary source verification within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification required for RNs within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, free from communicable diseases
  • Fit testing within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel within 30 days of start
  • Required immunizations or titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Flu vaccination or mask/declination form during flu season
  • 2 clinical references required
  • Complete employment application/resume
  • Annual skills checklist update required
  • Photo for badge (professional, plain background)
  • Completion of facility-specific compliance and orientation paperwork prior to start

Notes

  • Floating may be required within clinical skillset
  • Must be comfortable with patient ratios and neurological patient care
  • First-time travelers are welcome
  • Pending licenses accepted under specific conditions

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity neurological progressive care unit within a leading Level I trauma and Magnet-designated hospital. Candidates should have strong neuro and cardiac nursing skills, be comfortable with EPIC charting, and meet all certification and compliance requirements.
