Position: Registered Nurse (RN) or ED Tech – Emergency Department (ED)
Employment Type: Contractor
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Experience Requirements

• RN: 2-5 years nursing experience, with at least 1 year of ED experience within the past year
• ED Tech: Minimum 1 year ED experience
• First-time travelers accepted only if they have 3+ years ED experience

Unit and Patient Information

• Unit size: 20 beds, plus 8 overflow and 4 CA chairs
• Average patients per day: 100-160
• Patient population: Neonates to Geriatrics (5-8% pediatrics)
• Common patient conditions: Chest pain, dizziness, syncope, strokes, sepsis, orthopedic injuries, respiratory distress/failure, STEMI, COVID, behavioral health medical clearance

Patient Ratios

• RN: 1:3-4 during day and night shifts
• ED Tech: 2-4 techs per shift; 1 tech from 0300-0700

Required Certifications

• RN: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS required; TNCC preferred
• ED Tech: BLS required

Skills Required

• RN:

  • General ED skills
  • Strong IV skills
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation/monitoring
  • Foley and NGT placement/management
  • Knowledgeable in STEMI, CVA, Sepsis treatments
  • Medication titration

• ED Tech:

  • Strong phlebotomy skills (required)
  • Splinting (orthopedic glass)
  • Perform EKGs, CS, POC testing
  • Assist with specimen collection (stool, urine)
  • Place patients on telemetry monitor
  • Assist in turning patients (ED boarding)

Education

• Not specifically detailed beyond experience and certifications

Unit Support

• Receptionist/HUC available 24/7
• Charge nurse covers low acuity patients and may take patient assignments as needed
• ED Educator available Monday-Friday
• Phlebotomy assists with peripheral blood draws
• Resource Nurse (Flow Nurse) during peak hours
• Respiratory Therapist (RT) available 24/7
• Hospitalist/PA available 24/7
• Telemetry monitoring at bedside and nurse’s station (no tele tech)
• Sitter/Transporter available on PM and night shifts
• Clinical operations technician support

Technology and Equipment

• EMR: EPIC (experience within last 2 years required)
• IV pumps: Alaris
• Medication dispensing: Pyxis
• Monitors: Standard telemetry and cardiac monitors

Floating

• Floating based on facility needs
• Travelers float first
• Floating roles include helping hands, taskers, sitters, runners
• No patient assignments while floating

Orientation

• 1 shift orientation
• Initial hours with Nurse Manager and Supervisor for onboarding
• Remainder of shift with unit preceptor

Scheduling

• Shifts:

  • Days: 0700-1900, 1100-2300
  • Evenings: 1500-0300
  • Nights: 1900-0700 (ED Tech only also 1900-0700)
• Weekend rotation: every other weekend
• Holiday expectation: 1 holiday
• Schedule cycle: 6 weeks, with 1-2 weeks’ notice of schedule
• On-call: No
