Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Facility: University of Virginia Medical Center


Job Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse

  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Schedule:
    • Rotating shifts
    • 36 hours per week
    • Every other weekend off (Friday, Saturday nights and Saturday, Sunday days)
    • Every other holiday off
  • Unit: Postpartum/Antepartum with float required within skill set including NICU to care for level II nursery patients
  • Electronic Health Record: Epic required
  • License: VA license pending submissions accepted
  • Time Off: Can approve 40 hours of RTO (Requested Time Off)

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – may be required depending on unit
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – may be required depending on unit
  • CHEMO (Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate) – required for chemo, oncology, and infusion RNs
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – may be required depending on unit
  • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) – may be required depending on unit
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) – required for Behavioral Health nurses
  • Additional certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., NICU-specific certifications)

Required Background and Compliance Checks

  • 7-year criminal background check within 60 days of start, updated annually
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM checks within 30 days of start, updated every 30 days
  • HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start, updated every 30 days
  • Education verification through a 3rd party vendor (BSN preferred; ASN required if no BSN)
  • Transcript or official diploma (photocopies not accepted)
  • Fingerprinting may be required depending on unit (Virginia State Police National Criminal Background Check)
  • Abuse Registry Search required only for Behavioral Health and Unit 5 East candidates
  • State-specific fingerprinting and child abuse registry checks for Behavioral Health candidates

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands, updated annually
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination (no exemptions allowed)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (2-step PPD or Qgold acceptable; Tspot not accepted)
  • Annual TB questionnaire if past positive
  • Measles (Rubeola) – 2 vaccines or positive titer required (no exemptions)
  • Mumps – 2 vaccines or positive titer required (declination accepted but not clearance-holding)
  • Rubella – 2 vaccines or positive titer required (declination accepted but not clearance-holding)
  • Hepatitis B – Positive Hep B Surface Antibody titer required or negative surface antibody and antigen titers (no declinations)
  • Varicella – 2 vaccines or titer required (declination accepted but not clearance-holding)
  • Seasonal Flu vaccination required annually (no exemptions)
  • Drug testing within 2 months of start, updated annually (10-panel including marijuana and fentanyl)

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Completion of professional appearance guidelines review
  • Completion of release authorization and traveler compliance forms prior to start
  • Fit testing for patient-facing clinical roles (completed onsite if required)
  • Pass/Fail cardiac rhythm assessment during orientation for adult inpatient RN and Mother-Baby units (not required for some specialty areas)
  • Acknowledgment of pass/fail testing required for applicable units
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Performance evaluations and internal evaluations required if previously worked with the system over 1 year
  • Skills checklist updated annually for applicable units

Additional Notes

  • Float pool assignments may include NICU and Pediatric Critical Care
  • Candidates with latex allergy must complete a latex questionnaire
  • Radiation badges are no longer provided for new candidates; existing badge holders will be grandfathered
  • Epic experience is required for this position

This position offers a dynamic clinical environment with rotating shifts and requires flexibility to float within related units. Compliance with extensive background, health, and certification requirements is mandatory.
