Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Salisbury, North Carolina

Unit & Job Details
- Unit: Primary cardiac and stroke unit
- Shift: 12-hour nights (18:45 - 07:15)
- Hours: 36 hours can be offered
- Patient Ratios: Target 1:5-6; nurses must be comfortable with up to 6 patients during surge
- Call Requirement: Yes, frequency depends on patient census
- Float Requirement: Yes
- Weekend Schedule: Every other weekend plus 2 Mondays and 2 Fridays in a 6-week period
- Orientation: 36 hours; travelers must be available every day during the first week for hospital orientation
- Scheduling: Self-scheduling with leadership oversight; no block scheduling allowed
- Return to Office (RTO): Not allowed after booking; max 7 days for auto offer
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a similar high-acuity, busy unit with comparable patient ratios
- IV start and telemetry experience
- Experience with pre- and post-procedure cardiac patients, cardiac drips, PCI
- Comfortable with fast-paced environment; unit typically turns over 78-90 patients weekly
- Able to manage multiple drips including Cardizem, Dopamine, Amiodarone
- Experience with stable pre/post care for pacemaker implantation, ICDs, cardiac catheterization, TR bands
- Experience with post uncomplicated interventional peripheral vascular/cardiac interventions without sheaths
- Comfortable caring for patients with stable high flow oxygen, non-rebreather masks (palliative only), and chronic Bipap use (no new Bipap)
- Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BCLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Certification
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit specifics (e.g., PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC)
Patient Diagnoses & Procedures
- Cardiac and stroke patients including:
- Unstable angina
- Low-risk chest pain evaluation
- Congestive heart failure (CHF)
- Dysrhythmias
- New CVA and TIA patients
- COVID positive patients currently housed on unit, including those on opti-flow and acute Bipap during surges
Equipment & Systems
- Telemetry and pulse oximetry
- High flow oxygen (stable patients only)
- Non-rebreather mask (palliative use only)
- Bipap (chronic use only, no new Bipap)
- Pyxis medication system
- Documentation and communication via EPIC Dimensions and SBAR
Dress Code
- Scrubs: Navy blue, white, or a mixture of both
- Jackets must match scrubs in material and color
Background & Compliance Requirements
- Criminal background check within 90 days for all locations lived in the last 7 years
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 90 days
- Education verification for highest degree earned (RNs may start with pending verification if license is valid)
- State-specific searches including North Carolina Healthcare Personnel Registry and Division of Medical Assistance within 90 days
- Drug testing within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days required
- Fit mask testing (N95 or PAPR training) required
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (titer or 2 vaccines)
- Hepatitis B titer or facility-specific declination form
- Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray per protocol
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required with minimum 82% score; must pass within 72 hours of assignment start
Additional Notes
- No block scheduling allowed
- Must be comfortable with a fast-paced, high turnover unit
- Team lead available to assist with admissions and discharges
- COVID patients present on unit; appropriate PPE and protocols required
- Must complete all required facility-specific orientation and compliance documents prior to start
This position is ideal for experienced cardiac/stroke RNs comfortable with telemetry, multiple drips, and a fast-paced environment, willing to work night shifts and flexible scheduling with call and float requirements.
