Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Specialty: Registered Nurse
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Shift: 12-hour night shifts, 36 hours per week
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend required
Call Requirement: None
Float Requirement: Not required

Job Description
- Acute hemodialysis experience required for day shift; cycler experience not needed for day shift.
- Night shift RNs must be competent with cycler, CAPD, obtaining PD fluid samples, and hemodialysis.
- CAPD experience is helpful.
- Patient ratios: 1:1 to 1:2.
- No call required; night shift assignments may include “task” work within division departments rather than direct patient assignment.
- Contract staff expected to participate in Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team; may be required to report during catastrophic events or disasters.
- Patient diagnoses include:
- End stage renal disease on dialysis
- Chronic kidney disease progressing to hemodialysis
- Acute kidney injury
- Peritoneal dialysis failure/infection requiring modality change to hemodialysis
- Transplant rejection requiring hemodialysis
Unit Details
- Acute Hemodialysis Unit with 9 stations plus one isolation station.
- Hemodialysis room operates two shifts per day; patient transport coordinated via Epic.
- ICU/PCU and bedside treatments require 1:1 care for patients on ventilators, titratable IV drips, airborne isolation.
Required Skills & Certifications
- Minimum 2 years nursing experience.
- BLS certification required.
- Acute hemodialysis experience with Fresenius equipment required.
- Peritoneal dialysis experience with Baxter equipment preferred.
- Night shift requires competency with cycler, CAPD, and PD fluid sampling.
Preferred Certifications
- ACLS
- CDN or CNN
Equipment & Systems
- Fresenius T Hemodialysis Machines with CliC and Bibag.
- Marcor Millenium HX portable reverse osmosis machines.
- Unit systems include Pyxis (medication), EPIC Dimensions (documentation), and Voalte phones for nurse communication.
Orientation & Uniform
- Orientation: 24 hours total (12 hours ICU/offsite + 12 hours dialysis room/peritoneal dialysis).
- Scrubs provided.
Compliance & Background Requirements
- Criminal background check within 90 days covering local, federal, national databases, DOJ sex offender search, and education verification for highest degree earned.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 90 days.
- State-specific searches including North Carolina Healthcare Personnel Registry and Division of Medical Assistance within 90 days.
- Drug screen required within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result).
- Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days required.
- Fit testing for N95 mask or completion of PAPR training required within 1 year.
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: titer or 2 vaccines; boosters required if negative/equivocal.
- Varicella: titer or 2 vaccines; boosters required if negative/equivocal.
- Hepatitis B: titer, series, or facility-specific declination form if negative/equivocal.
- Seasonal Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 to 10/31).
- TB testing: PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray within 5 years and physician-signed TB questionnaire within 30 days required.
Additional Requirements
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for certain specialties; must pass with 82% or higher.
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) training required for ER and Behavioral Health nurses, to be completed onsite within first 30 days.
- Completion of facility-specific orientation modules and confidentiality agreements required prior to start.
- Candidates must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation modules (approx. 8 hours).
- Candidates must complete Medication Safety training and submit certificate of completion.
- Candidates must complete PAPR fit test training if applicable.
- References: 2 professional references within 3 years for travel and acute care allied/per diem; 1 reference for non-acute care per diem.
- Employment application must be uploaded.
Notes
- Days off may be arranged as schedule allows based on department needs.
- Contract staff may be reassigned mid-contract to centralized office or other units as needed.
- No call or float requirements, but weekend coverage every other weekend is expected.
- Storm/Hurricane team participation required for disaster response.
This position is ideal for experienced RNs with acute hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis skills seeking a travel/contract role on night shifts in a specialized dialysis unit with no call and limited float requirements.
