Unit Information

• Unit: Cardiac Stepdown Unit (CSU)
• Number of Beds: 18
• Staffing: 38 total staff

  • Day Shift: 5 RNs, 1 Critical Care (CC), 2 Patient Care Technicians (PCT)
  • Night Shift: 5 nurses, 1 PCT
• Patient Ratios: 4:1
• Equipment Used: Central lines, PCA pumps, Foley catheters, chest tubes, pacer wires, telemetry, drains
• Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Meditech

Required Skills

• Must be able to read cardiac monitors
• Must be able to administer narcotics

Preferred Skills

• Stepdown unit experience
• Cardiac knowledge

Typical Procedures on Unit

• CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft)
• Valve replacement
• TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement)
• Mitral clip procedures
• Thoracotomy
• Management of Afib, CHF, MI
• Cardiac drips including Cardizem, amiodarone, heparin, nitro

Certifications & Licenses Required

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• NIH Certification
• Registered Nurse License

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of experience as an RN in the specialty

Work Environment & Policies

• Floating Areas: Telemetry and Medical-Surgical units
• Dress Code: All navy scrubs
• Vital signs and assessments every 4 hours
• Rhythm interpretation every 4 hours
• Weekend Schedule: Every other weekend required, overtime available
