Description

Job Opportunity: PICU Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Specialty: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Registered Nurse
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (Nights: 7 PM - 7:30 AM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Up to 5 weekend night shifts per schedule (including Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
  • On-call: Not required
  • Patient Ratios: 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 (mixed ICU and Stepdown patients)
  • Floating: Floating within scope to meet facility needs is required

Unit Description

  • 28-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit providing intensive and intermediate care for children ages 0-18
  • Patient population includes medical and surgical diagnoses such as respiratory compromise, trauma, post-operative surgical care, neurology/neurosurgery
  • Advanced therapies provided: ECMO, CRRT, renal/peritoneal dialysis, ventilatory and cardiac support
  • Pediatric Palliative care available as needed
  • Multidisciplinary team includes RNs, Patient Care Technicians, Unit Secretaries, Respiratory Therapy, Pediatric Dietitians, and Pediatric Pharmacists

Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of PICU experience (highest required)
  • Travel Experience: Prior travel experience NOT required; first-time travelers accepted
  • Licensure: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (American Heart Association only)
    • PALS (American Heart Association only)
  • Preferred Experience: ECMO, CRRT

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • Block scheduling may be accommodated with manager approval, depending on unit needs
  • Local candidates accepted on a case-by-case basis
  • Guaranteed hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Local radius: 60 miles

Important Notes

  • During hurricane season (June-November, peak in August-September), all employees and contractors may be assigned to emergency response teams. Travelers should consider this before accepting assignments during this period.

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Proof of work eligibility (I-9) and valid Driver’s License/State ID
  • Social Security Card or SSN verification
  • Annual background check covering 7 years of residence/work history, including multiple national and state-level checks
  • Education verification (diploma/transcripts) preferred or required
  • Primary source verification of active, unencumbered SC RN license or compact license
  • NURSYS verification for licensure
  • Drug screening: 10-panel drug test within 90 days of start
  • Physical exam: Initial and annual updates attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 90 days (or documented history)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titers or vaccination series with boosters as needed
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccination series, or declination
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or medical/religious exemption (required during flu season)
  • COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as applicable
  • Color blindness testing prior to start
  • Facility-specific orientation modules and first day instructions must be completed before orientation
  • Passport-style badge photo required prior to start

Certifications Summary

  • BLS (AHA only)
  • PALS (AHA only)
  • ACLS not required for pediatric units
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) recommended
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) not required for ER RNs
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) not required for PICU

Additional Notes for Healthcare Recruiters and Workers

  • All licensure and certification documents must be current and not expiring within 30 days of assignment start
  • Education and employment history verification required, including 2 clinical references
  • Radiation badge not required for PICU RNs
  • Travelers must upload all required health and compliance documents into the facility’s system prior to start
  • Facility may allow one shift off every two weeks; scheduling flexibility subject to unit needs

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity pediatric critical care environment with advanced therapies and a multidisciplinary team in a Level I Trauma and Magnet-designated teaching hospital.
