Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (PICU) - Charleston, South Carolina
Position Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (PICU)
- Location: Charleston, South Carolina
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: 3x12 hour shifts, rotating primarily nights (2 months nights 7p-7:30a, 1 month days 7a-7:30p)
- Weekend Requirement: Up to 5 weekend shifts per schedule for nights (Fri/Sat/Sun), 4 weekend shifts per schedule for days (Sat/Sun)
- On-call: Not required
- Patient Ratios: 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 (mixed ICU and Stepdown patients)
- Floating: Yes, within scope to meet facility needs
Unit Description
- 28-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit caring for children ages 0-18
- Provides intensive and intermediate care for medical and surgical diagnoses including respiratory compromise, trauma, post-op surgical patients, neurology/neurosurgery
- Advanced therapies include ECMO, CRRT, renal/peritoneal dialysis
- Pediatric palliative care available as needed
- Multidisciplinary team includes RNs, Patient Care Technicians, Respiratory Therapy, Pediatric Dietitians, and Pharmacists
Experience & Licensure Requirements
- Years of PICU Experience Required: 2 years
- Accepts 1st time travelers: Yes
- Preferred Experience: ECMO, CRRT
- License Required: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license
- Certifications Required:
- BLS (American Heart Association)
- PALS (American Heart Association)
Certifications & Competencies
- BLS: Required for all clinical staff (AHA or ARC accepted)
- PALS: Required for all pediatric units except Pediatric OR
- ACLS: Not required for pediatric units
- NRP: Required (AHA/AAP only)
- TNCC: Required except for ER RNs
- EFM: Not required for NICU
- Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam: Required as applicable
- Competency Exam: Required
- Color Blind Testing: Required prior to start
- NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs
- IV Certification: Required for select LPNs if applicable
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical Exam: Initial and annual update required
- Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, annual renewal required
- Immunizations/Vaccinations:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; boosters if low titer
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; boosters if low titer
- Flu Vaccine: Required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30); medical/religious exemptions accepted but no declinations
- COVID Vaccines: Not required but highly preferred; vaccination records must be uploaded or declination form completed
- Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start, no instant tests allowed
- Annual TB Questionnaire: Required
Background & Documentation
- Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, including:
- SSN Trace
- Statewide and national criminal checks
- Sex offender registry
- FACIS 3
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Education verification required; diploma/transcripts accepted as placeholder if needed
- Work history verification of last 3 clinical employers required
- References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
- Employment application must include all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
Facility Specific Requirements
- Completion of orientation modules prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
- Upload clear, passport-style badge photo (frontal view, solid light background, business casual attire)
- First Day Instructions (FDI) and OurDay modules must be completed before orientation; failure to complete results in being sent home
- COVID and Flu vaccination documentation must be uploaded into the facility’s platform (OurDay)
- Radiation badge required only for specific roles (not applicable for PICU RN)
Additional Notes
- Local radius: 60 miles; locals accepted on a case-by-case basis
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- During hurricane season (June-November), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams; travelers should consider this before accepting assignments during this period
This position is ideal for PICU RNs with at least 2 years of experience, who hold the required licenses and certifications, and are comfortable working rotating shifts with weekend requirements in a Level I Trauma Center pediatric ICU setting.
