Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Description

  • Unit: GMU (Step Down Unit) caring for step down/med surg patients
  • Nurse to Patient Ratio: 1:5
  • Floating: Other med surg areas including AU and ER to care for med surg patients
  • Call: None
  • Weekend: Work every other weekend
  • Block scheduling cannot be accommodated
  • Must be available for the entire week of orientation
  • Equipment used: Welch Allyn Vital Sign Towers, Sigma IV Pumps, EPIC for documentation

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years PCU/Stepdown experience (highest required years of experience)
  • Starting IVs required
  • Chemotherapy administration preferred

Licenses & Certifications Required

  • Michigan RN License
  • BLS (AHA)
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement

Certifications to consider based on unit or specialty:

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA only
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – AHA only (if working with Pediatrics or ED)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure) – AAP or American Medical Learning Center (if working with Pediatrics)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – Required for ED
  • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) – As applicable
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) – As applicable
  • ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course) – As applicable

Prior Travel Experience

  • No explicit prior travel experience required

Compliance & Background Checks

  • Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search from age 18
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • MI LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start for certain positions (not specifically required for this RN role unless specified)
  • Education verification required (copy of highest degree or diploma acceptable)
  • Michigan Central Registry Clearance required for pediatric and certain specialty placements (not specifically required here unless working in those areas)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask test (Honeywell DC365N95HC) required if applicable
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (must include pertussis)
  • Negative TB test (PPD or Q Gold/Tspot) within 45 days of start
  • TB Questionnaire updated annually
  • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella – 2 vaccines or positive titer required
  • Hepatitis B – Titer, series, or facility declination required
  • Varicella – 2 vaccines or positive titer required
  • 10-panel drug test including Marijuana/THC within 45 days of start
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccination or approved exemption required for candidates starting after November 1

Additional Requirements

  • Complete medication/pharmacology competency exam within 1 year prior to assignment with a passing score of at least 80%
  • Competency exam in specialty within 1 year prior to start with passing score of at least 80%
  • One professional reference from supervisor/manager required
  • Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps (dated MM/YYYY acceptable)
  • Skills checklist for applicable unit, updated annually

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • No call required
  • Work every other weekend
  • Floating to other med surg areas including AU and ER
  • Must attend full orientation week

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with step down/PCU experience looking for a travel contract in Michigan with a 13-week commitment.
