Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Emergency Department)

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: 3x12 hour nights (7 PM - 7 AM), weekdays, every other weekend required
  • Patient Ratio: 4:1
  • Patient Population: Infants to Geriatrics
  • Unit Description: Level 1 Trauma, 24 beds
    • Neurological, orthopedic, psychiatric, renal emergencies
    • Special focus on trauma
    • High psychiatric patient population (no separate psych area)
    • Multiple high acuity patients boarding

Experience Requirements

  • Registered Nurse Experience: Minimum 2 years RN experience required
  • Specialty Experience: Minimum 1 year Emergency Department experience required
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted if they have appropriate experience

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA only
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) - Blue Card required; online courses not accepted
  • Additional skills: IV Start, Telemetry

Note: Candidates are not allowed to start with certifications pending or complete onsite.


Licensure

  • WV or Compact RN License required
  • Pending license accepted for submission but must have active WV/Compact RN license before start

Schedule & Work Conditions

  • Every other weekend required
  • No call requirements
  • Floating within scope may be required to meet facility needs
  • Blocked schedules possible (discuss during interview)
  • Guaranteed 36 hours per week

Candidate Requirements

  • Must have permanent address greater than 100 miles from facility to submit (75-100 miles considered case-by-case)
  • Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent date worked
  • Must provide valid Driver’s License and Social Security Card
  • Must complete annual skills checklist for specialty
  • Must provide 1 reference from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse within past year

Orientation & Training

  • Orientation held every other week on Thursday and Friday (2 days)
  • Orientation includes Cerner Infusion Management
  • Must complete required inservice training modules (approx. 4 hours) 1 week before start, including pass/fail testing for EKG, medication calculation, and blood administration
  • Candidates must review facility-specific policies such as blood administration, dress code, math calculation packet, and EKG review prior to start

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by appropriate healthcare provider, confirming good health and no physical limitations
  • Annual fit mask testing (N95) required; accommodations available if needed
  • Required vaccinations and documentation:
    • Tdap (mandatory, no declinations accepted)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titers required
    • Hepatitis B: documented series or titer required
    • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titers required
    • Seasonal Flu vaccine or approved exemption required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31)
    • COVID-19 vaccination not mandatory; proof of vaccination or signed declination accepted
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a comprehensive panel (no placeholders or pending results accepted)
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, SSN trace, sex offender search, and others as required within 30 days of start

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must submit a complete application packet including work history, specialty skills checklist, references, license verification, and required documents
  • Candidates must clearly state shift preference (any, days, or nights) in submission
  • Facility requires compliance with all policies and documentation prior to start
  • Exemption requests for vaccinations require facility approval and may delay start
