Registered Nurse (ICU) - Travel/Contract
Location: Fishers, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Work primarily in ICU with floating to PCU (Progressive Care Unit)
- Must be able to manage higher patient ratios
- Screen strong PCU RNs for floating assignments

- Minimum 3 years of ICU nursing experience required
- First-time travelers not accepted (prior travel experience required)
Certifications Required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Licensure
- Pending license accepted
- Must be willing to obtain Indiana compact or Indiana temporary license prior to start
Work Schedule
- 8 and 10 hour shifts, 40 hours per week
- Option for 3 shifts of 12 hours (36 hours/week) or 4 shifts of 12 hours (48 hours/week)
- Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
Float Requirements
- Floating between ICU and PCU required
Patient Population / Unit Information
- ICU patients with conditions such as ARDS, COPD, STEMI, NSTEMI, DKA, AKI, UTI, Acute Shock
- Post cardiac surgery patients (directly from OR)
- Pre/post cardiac catheterization/intervention care
Clinical Skills & Special Requirements
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Obtain and interpret 12 lead EKG/ECG
- Thermoregulation protocols (hypothermia/hyperthermia)
- Sheath removal
- IV insulin protocols
- Management of chronic/acute renal failure
- Accessing/managing ports, arterial lines, central lines, PICC lines
- Blood product administration
- Starting and maintaining IVs
- Continuous IV paralytics and sedation
- Emergency medication administration
- Procedural sedation administration and monitoring
- Titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
- Stroke (CVA) and acute stroke management
- Hypothermia protocol/Arctic Sun device use
- Assist with BiPAP, CPAP, chest tube insertion/removal
- Care of ventilated patients, ventilator management, suctioning (ETT, NT)
- High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) management
- Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)
- Infection prevention and isolation precautions including PPE use
- Phlebotomy
- Care of surgical wounds with drains and wound vac
Additional Requirements
- Must have prior travel experience (first timers not accepted)
- Locals not accepted
- Must be able to float and take higher patient ratios

- Short-term acute care facility
- Charting system: Cerner
- Scrub color: Red tops, black bottoms
- Free parking
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
- Background checks including criminal, sex offender, education verification, and others as required
- Drug screening (10 panel, negative within 12 months)
- Physical exam within 12 months
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific respirators required)
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred)
- TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no declinations)
- Varicella (positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no declinations)
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required
- Competency exams including medication/pharmacology and unit competency
- References: Minimum 2 from recent employment with appropriate supervisory titles
- Employment application with full work history and explanation of gaps
- Skills checklist within 12 months and annually
- Facility-specific compliance and orientation documents must be completed prior to start
Important Notes
- IU Health will not allow Indiana RNs to work at their facilities after 11/30/2024, except for Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers
- Must be willing to work 2 out of 3 major holidays
- Floating between ICU and PCU required with ability to manage higher patient ratios
This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs with prior travel contract experience who are comfortable managing complex critical care patients and floating to PCU.
