Job Opportunity: OR RN - West Virginia (Martinsburg)
Position Overview
- Specialty: Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN)
- Location: Martinsburg, West Virginia
- Shift Length: 8-hour shifts (also available 10- and 12-hour shifts with varied start times, primarily day/evening)
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
Experience Requirements
- Specialty Experience: 3 years of OR nursing experience required (higher end of 2-3 years stated)
- Prior Travel Experience: 2-3 previous travel assignments required
- Preferred Experience: Orthopedic and Neurosurgery experience preferred
Certifications Required
- BLS (AHA)
- ACLS
- PALS
Work Environment & Unit Details
- Unit: Main Operating Room (Cost Center 72)
- Number of Suites: 14
- Average Cases per Day: 28 cases/day plus 5 add-ons (including same-day surgery cases)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:1
- EMR System: EPIC
- Charge Nurse Coverage: Yes, 7am - 7pm (charge nurses may circulate if needed)
- OR Techs: Present, with BLS required; CST certification preferred but not required
- Scrubs: Provided for RNs and OR Techs
- Telemetry: RNs are not required to interpret strips; anesthesia handles this
- Ventilator Use: Yes, with Respiratory Therapist in-house 24/7
- Pharmacy: Available 24/7 with Omnicell system
Call and Weekend Requirements
- RN Weekend On-Call: One weekend day per month, 7am - 7pm
- CST Weekend On-Call: One weekend day per month, 7am - 7pm
- RN Weeknight On-Call: One weeknight per month, 7pm - 7am
- CST Weeknight On-Call: One weeknight per month, 7pm - 7am
- Call Response Time: 20 minutes (if >20 minutes away, must stay on site)
- Holidays: No holiday call required
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation: 3 shifts of floor-specific orientation
- Scheduling: No self-scheduling for travelers; block scheduling allowed if it meets unit needs
- Floating: No floating required, except occasional float to outpatient surgery center as needed
Typical Cases
- All surgical cases except open heart surgery
- Common cases include neurosurgery/spine, total joint replacements, open fractures, general surgery, ENT
- Vascular cases expected to start in August
Additional Notes
- Scrubbing by RNs is a plus but not required
- Techs handle room turnover and housekeeping duties (no aids or housekeeping staff)
- Typically run 7-8 ORs simultaneously with a 2:1 tech-to-RN ratio
- Surgeon on-call hours: Weekdays 7pm - 7am; weekends 7pm Friday - 7am Monday
- Respiratory Therapists bring vented patients to OR and maintain them in PACU
- No IV team on site
- Must disclose any background issues at time of submission
- Driver’s license address must be outside 50 miles from the facility
This position is ideal for experienced OR RNs with prior travel assignments looking for a structured, well-supported surgical environment with a variety of cases and consistent call requirements.
