Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Unit: 2S Med Rehab
- Shift: 3x12 hour shifts, 7pm-7am, weekdays, every other weekend required
- Patient Population:
- Cerebrovascular disease (Stroke)
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
- Amputees
- Spinal cord injuries (SCI)
- Neurological diseases
- Severe deconditioning related to cardiac or respiratory events
- Unit Description: 24 beds, interdisciplinary care team including physiatrist, NP, nurse, therapists, and social worker
- Therapy: Patients receive 3 hours of therapy daily, Monday-Friday
- Length of Stay: Approximately 2 weeks
- Float: RN may float within scope to meet facility needs
- Schedule Flexibility: Open to block schedule requests (discuss during interview)
- Guaranteed Hours: Options for 36 or 48 hours per week
Experience Requirements
- RN Experience: Minimum 2 years required
- Specialty Experience: Minimum 1 year in acute care rehab required
- Charge Experience: Preferred but not required
- Prior Travel Experience: Not required (first-timers accepted)
Licensure & Certifications
- License: WV or Compact RN license required; pending license allowed but must be active before start
- Certifications Required:
- BLS (AHA only) - mandatory before start, no pending or onsite completion allowed
- ACLS preferred (AHA only)
- Acute care rehab experience preferred
- Additional Certifications:
- NIH Stroke Certification (as applicable)
- Pass/Fail Testing (EKG, Medication Calculation, Blood Administration) required for nursing candidates
- Orientation: Held every other week on Thursday; orientation now two days (Thursday and Friday)
Staffing Ratios
- Day Shift: 1 nurse to 4-5 patients
- Night Shift: 1 nurse to 5-6 patients
Work Requirements & Policies
- Every other weekend required
- No call requirement
- 100-mile radius rule applies (75-99 miles require facility approval)
- No Return to Origin (RTO) restrictions, but requests must be discussed during interview
- Scrub Color: Royal Blue/White or combination
- Charting System: Cerner
- Parking: Free parking garage for travelers
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Flu Vaccine: Required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless medically exempt with documentation
- COVID Vaccine: Not required
- Physical Exam: Must be completed within 1 year of start, signed by appropriate provider, confirming good health and no limitations
- Fit Mask Testing: Annual fit testing required; onsite fit testing may be accommodated if no clinic within 100 miles
- TB Testing: Negative TB test within 3 months of start; annual TB questionnaire required for positive TB responders
- Immunizations:
- Tdap (after age 11) required; exemptions allowed with approval
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) - 2 vaccines or positive titers required; boosters if titers negative or equivocal
- Hepatitis B - series or positive titer required; declination allowed if series completed and titer negative
- Varicella - 2 vaccines or positive titers required; boosters if titers negative or equivocal
- Drug Screen: Must be within 30 days of start and updated annually; includes standard panel (amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, opiates, PCP, benzodiazepines, methadone, propoxyphene)
- Background Checks: 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start, including SSN trace, sex offender search, national and international checks as applicable
- References: Minimum 1 reference required from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse within the past year
Additional Notes
- Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent day worked at this facility
- Candidate must submit a comprehensive packet including work history, specialty skills checklist, references, license verification, driver’s license, and social security card
- Pass/fail testing required for nursing candidates with two attempts allowed per exam
- Various facility-specific documents and policies must be reviewed, signed, and returned as part of onboarding
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification required for certain units (ER, Surgical & Trauma ICU, Trauma Stepdown, Behavioral Health)
