Job Description
- Charge pay available with additional compensation for charge nurse responsibilities.
- Call-in policy:
- If a traveler calls in for a contracted shift and is 0.9 FTE, they must make up the day during the pay period or add the shift at the end of the contract.
- If 1.2 FTE, call-in shifts will be added to the end of the contract.
- Local candidates are not accepted.
- Weekend work: Travelers expected to work every other weekend; consecutive weekends may be required based on operational needs.
- Charge nurse coverage may be required with training and resources provided.
- Teaching facility: Travelers must be willing to precept and/or have students shadow them.
- Floating: Travelers may be expected to float between Med-Surg, PCU, and ICU units with resources provided.
- Staffing ratios:
- PCU: 1:4
- Med-Surg: 1:5-6 (sometimes mixed with PCU patients)
- Unit info: 32-bed mixed model unit (15 PCU beds, 17 Med-Surg beds) focused on cardio-pulmonary care with emphasis on pulmonary conditions.
- Patient population includes cardiac medical, valve replacement, COPD, CHF, pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, lung transplant (pre/post), trach-to-vent patients, neurodegenerative diseases, trauma, flu, TB, and COVID-19.
- COVID-19 vaccine required for all travelers (medical or religious exemptions accepted with documentation).
- Indiana RN license restrictions effective 11/30/2024 (exceptions for Periop/OR RN’s, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers).
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience.
- Candidates with Med-Surg experience plus ICU and PCU patient experience with an additional 2 years will be considered.
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
Certifications Required
- ACLS (AHA only, RQI acceptable)
- BLS (AHA only, RQI acceptable)
Additional Certifications (may be required depending on unit)
- PALS
- NRP
- Chemotherapy certification
- TNCC
- EFM
- NIH Stroke Certification
- Others as applicable per unit
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
- Background checks including:
- 7-year history criminal checks
- EPLS/GSA/SAM
- HHS/OIG
- Education verification
- Transcript/Diploma (official copy required)
- State nursing license verification (within 30 days of start)
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required)
- Immunizations and health documents:
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
- Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Seasonal Flu vaccination/documentation required (no declinations accepted)
- Drug testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
- Color blind exam (Ishihara or equivalent) required
- Competency exams including medication/pharmacology and unit competency exams
- References: Minimum 2 references from recent employment with appropriate supervisory titles
- Employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps over 30 days
Orientation and Training
- Completion of facility-specific orientation packets and tests required prior to start.
- Mandatory completion of 22 RRT modules for Respiratory Therapists (if applicable).
- HIPAA and safety manual acknowledgments required.
This position is ideal for experienced Registered Nurses comfortable working in a cardio-pulmonary mixed unit with a willingness to float and precept students in a teaching hospital environment. Compliance with strict immunization and documentation policies is mandatory.
