Registered Nurse (RN) - Travel/Contract Position
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Specialty: ICU/PCU/MS Float (must be comfortable working all three units)
Contract Length: 13 weeks (1 quarter)
Job Description
- Float between ICU, PCU, and Medical-Surgical (MS) units as staffing needs require (up to 2-3 times per shift, every 4 hours)
- Must be comfortable working all 3 specialties with patient ratios of at least 1:5
- Shift: 3x12 hour shifts (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM), 4x12 shifts available by request
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
- Holiday requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
- Charting experience with EPIC required
- Accepts first-time travelers and local candidates
- Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license required
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Required Clinical Skills & Experience
- Minimum 2 years ICU experience at a Level 1 or Level 2 facility
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, arterial line and central line management, blood product administration
- Management of BiPAP/CPAP, ventilated patients, suctioning (ETT, NT)
- Cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, titrating cardiac drips
- Responding to emergencies via Rapid Response/Code teams
- Managing continuous IV sedation, emergency medications, titrating cardiac/vasoactive drips, IV insulin protocols
Unit Patient Ratios
- ICU: 2:1
- PCU: 5:1
- MS: 6:1 (may flex up to 7:1)
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Staffing needs re-evaluated every 4 hours, requiring flexibility to float between units
- Shift work primarily nights with weekend and holiday coverage required
- Facility is a Level I Trauma Center, Magnet-designated for nursing excellence, and affiliated with a medical school
Additional Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year, free from communicable diseases
- Fit testing within 1 year, updated annually
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
- Drug screening (10-panel) within 30 days of start
- Immunizations or positive titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
- Background checks including 7-year history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG within 30 days of start
- Education verification and transcript/diploma required
- Two clinical references required
- Skills checklist updated annually
- Compliance with facility-specific documents and orientation requirements
Prior Travel Experience
- Not required; first-time travelers accepted
This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs comfortable with floating across multiple critical care units and working flexible schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays.
