Description

Registered Nurse (RN) - PCU/MS Float

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Float position covering Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Medical-Surgical (MS) units
  • Must be comfortable working all PCU and MS units
  • Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM); 4x12 shifts available upon request
  • Floating may occur 2-3 times per shift (every 4 hours based on staffing needs)
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Holiday requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Locals accepted (subject to radius criteria)
  • Pending license accepted if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license required

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)

Required Clinical Skills

  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, and blood product administration
  • Central line care, tracheostomy management, and non-invasive airway support (nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP, chest tubes)
  • Cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, titrating cardiac drips
  • Responding to emergencies via Rapid Response/Code teams
  • Managing PCA and heparin protocols, administering IV insulin, and handling endocrine/metabolic conditions
  • Experience with telemetry and stepdown-level care (PCU/DOU/IMC)
  • Cardiovascular experience in pre/post cardiac catheterization settings

Unit Details

  • PCU average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5
  • MS average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6 (may flex up to 1:7)

Scheduling & Policies

  • Call-off policy: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • All requests for return-to-office (RTO), block scheduling, and special scheduling must be submitted upfront

Licensure & Documentation Requirements

  • Active RN license (Virginia State or Compact) or pending license with single-state non-compact license
  • I-9 or attestation required
  • Driver’s License/State ID required within 48 hours of signing (must meet radius criteria)
  • Background check: 7-year history within 1 year of start, including SS trace, counties, nationwide, sex offender, FACIS Level 3, education verification
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Education verification of highest earned degree required
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, free from communicable diseases
  • Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually (not required for students)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Required immunizations or titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Flu vaccination or mask/declination form during flu season
  • 2 clinical references required
  • Complete employment application/resume
  • Annual skills checklist update required

Prior Travel Experience

  • First-time travelers accepted (no prior travel experience required)

Additional Notes

  • EPIC charting experience required
  • Must be comfortable floating frequently during shifts
  • Magnet-designated hospital with Level I Trauma Center status and advanced specialty care

This position is ideal for RNs with strong PCU/MS float experience, cardiovascular and telemetry skills, and flexibility in scheduling.
