Unit & Patient Population
- Neurosurgical/Neuroscience Med/Surgical/Step-down unit
- Patient age range: 15 to 100+ years
- Patient conditions include neuro trauma, motor vehicle accidents, stroke, seizures, brain and spinal cord injuries, tumors, laminectomies, hydrocephalus shunts
- Approximately 40% of patients transferred from Neuro Critical Care after acute events
- About 30% discharged to rehab facilities
- Early mobility and rehab are significant focuses, with daily collaboration with therapy teams
- 2-3 surgeries per day; Neuro Critical Care is the primary feeder unit
Staffing & Work Expectations
- Staffing ratios: 1 nurse to 5-6 patients
- Travelers expected to work every other weekend; consecutive weekends may be required based on operational needs
- Call-in shifts must be made up during the pay period or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status
- Unit travelers may be required to float to different levels of care including Med-Surg, PCU, and ICU with provided resources
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources provided
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required
- IV starts required
- Experience accepted in Medical-Surgical, Telemetry, and PCU levels
- Skillset includes primary nursing care with excellent team support
Certifications Required
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Certification
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only, RQI acceptable
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only, RQI acceptable
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA only, RQI acceptable
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA only
- CHEMO (Chemotherapy) - as applicable
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - as applicable
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) - as applicable
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam
- Unit Competency Exam
- Color Blind Testing (Ishihara exam or equivalent)
Licensure & Background Requirements
- Valid Registered Nurse license for Indiana (online verification required within 30 days before start)
- Background checks including 7 years of residence/work history, SSN trace, county and statewide criminal checks, national sex offender registry, FACIS Level III, education verification
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start (includes amphetamines, marijuana, cocaine, opiates, PCP)
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam completed within 12 months of start
- Fit mask test within 12 months of start (approved respirators include specific 3M and Honeywell N95 models)
- Tuberculosis screening (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT) within 1 year of start; chest x-ray required if positive test history
- Immunizations or positive titers required for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella (no declinations accepted)
- Hepatitis B (series, titer, or signed declination)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (strongly recommended)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for flu season (9/30 - 3/31)
Additional Requirements
- Minimum of 2 professional references from recent employment within 2 years, with supervisory titles
- Current employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps over 30 days
- Skills checklist completed within 12 months and annually thereafter
- Completion of facility-specific orientation, compliance, confidentiality, and policy forms prior to start
- Completion of mandatory IU Health RRT modules if applicable (for Respiratory Therapists)

- Locals are not accepted for this travel position
- First-time travelers are accepted
- IU Health will not allow Indiana RN license holders to work at their facilities effective 11/30/2024, except for Perioperative/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS) who are exempt from this rule and may work past the deadline
