Job Opportunity: Surgical Services (OR CST) - South Carolina, Columbia
Position Details
- Specialty: Surgical Services (OR CST)

- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Shift: 4x10 hour shifts (6:30 AM – 5:00 PM)
- On-call Requirement: 1 weekday call shift per week and 2-3 weekend call shifts in a 6-week schedule
- Weekend Requirement: 2-3 weekends in a 6-week schedule
- Number of ORs: 9
- Floating: Yes, between service lines (No floating to sister facilities)
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
Experience Requirements
- Years of Experience: Minimum 1+ years as OR CST with extensive general surgery experience
- Additional Experience: Experience with Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, and Robotic surgeries required
- Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required; first-time travelers accepted
Certifications & Licenses
- Required Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA certification only
- NBSTSA certification (MUSC does NOT accept NCCT)
- Radiation Badge (must be provided by agency; facility does NOT provide)
- Preferred/Additional Certifications:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - Required for all RNs
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - Required for MS and ER units
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA/AAP only
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - Required except for ER RNs
- NIH Stroke Certification - Required for ER
- IV Therapy Certification (for select LPNs)
- State License: South Carolina license required; primary source verification mandatory
- Temporary "walk-through" license option available for RNs without SC license (subject to eligibility)
- NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs and LPNs/LVNs
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Background Checks:
- Annual background check within 1 year of start, covering 7 years of history
- Must include SSN trace, state and national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
- Background check must be run within 90 days of start
- Education Verification: Required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if verification pending
- Work History Verification: Last 3 clinical employers verified; attestation letters accepted only if other verification methods exhausted
- References: Proof of 2 clinical references required; at least one from the same unit preferred
- Employment Application: Must include all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical Exam: Initial physical exam within 90 days of start, updated annually, confirming ability to meet job demands without restrictions
- Immunizations & Titers:
- Tdap vaccine within 10 years or declination form required
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start; if positive, additional documentation required
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titers or 2 vaccines required; low titers require boosters
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted
- Flu Vaccine: Required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30); medical/religious exemptions accepted but declinations are not
- COVID-19 Vaccination: Not required but highly preferred; vaccination records must be uploaded or declination form completed
- Respirator Clearance: Annual medical clearance required via RespSafety virtual questionnaire
Facility & Orientation Information
- Facility Type: Acute Care Hospital with 304 staffed beds
- Charting System: Epic
- Scrubs: Hospital-issued OR scrubs
- Parking: Free parking available with facility-issued pass; garages accommodate average SUV/truck
- Orientation:
- Completion of online modules (OurDay) required prior to orientation (approx. 2-6 hours depending on location)
- First Day Instructions (FDI) sent after client clearance
- Failure to complete modules before orientation may result in being sent home
- Photo for Badge: Passport-style color photo with solid light background required (frontal view, shoulders up, no hats/sunglasses)
Additional Notes
- Radiation Badge: Required for OR CST and must be obtained prior to starting clinical work; badges may take 5-7 days to process
- Floating: Traveler will float between service lines but not to sister facilities
- Local Radius: 60 miles; local candidates accepted on a case-by-case basis
- Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks; called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift
- Hurricane Season: Travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during hurricane season (June-November), especially August and September; new or extension assignments during this time should be considered carefully
This position is suitable for Surgical Technologists with at least 1 year of experience and specialized skills in multiple surgical areas, who are flexible with call and weekend shifts, and able to comply with comprehensive credentialing and health requirements.
