Job Opportunity: Med Surg Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Position Details

• Specialty: Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (Med Surg RN)
• Shift: 3x12 hour night shifts (18:45 - 07:15), every other weekend required
• Average Daily Census: 21 patients
• Experience Required: Minimum 1 year in Med Surg or Telemetry (higher experience not indicated)
• First-time Travelers: Accepted
• Weekend Requirement: Work every other weekend
• On-call: Not required
• Floating: Will float within scope as needed
• Block Scheduling: Open to discussion with manager
• Local Candidates: Accepted with no radius restrictions
• Licensure: Must have active Illinois RN license in hand to apply
• Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: Ideally no more than 5 days

Required Skills & Experience

• Work Setting Experience: Medical-Surgical and Telemetry units
• IV Therapy/Phlebotomy Skills:

  • Accessing ports
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line blood draws
  • Peripheral line care/management
  • PICC line management
  • Starting IVs
• Medication Skills: Heparin, Insulin, PCA (Patient Controlled Analgesia)
• Neurological/Psychiatric Experience: CVA (stroke) patients
• Respiratory Skills:

  • Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
  • CPAP/BiPAP
  • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
  • Interpretation of ABGs
  • Nasal cannula, oxygen face masks, portable oxygen tanks
  • Non-invasive airway management
  • Oral suctioning
  • Tracheostomy management
• Professional Knowledge:

  • Isolation precautions
  • Wound care and wound vac management
• Preferred Experience:

  • Teaching hospital experience
  • Community hospital experience
  • Previous charge nurse experience

Certifications Required

• BLS (Basic Life Support): Required
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Preferred

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

• Valid/current US Driver’s License or State ID
• Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
• Education verification (degree/transcript/diploma)
• State license primary source verification and NURSYS verification
• Competency exam required for clinical candidates
• Physical exam within 1 year of start, including labs within 7 days of contract signing
• Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
• Immunizations or titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
• 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
• Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
• References: 2 professional references required for clinical candidates
• Skills checklist required for clinical candidates
• Illinois-specific background and registry checks as required by state law

• Badge photo required before start

Prior Travel Experience

• Not required for this position

This position is ideal for a Med Surg RN with at least 1 year of experience looking for a travel contract in a Level I trauma, Magnet-recognized acute care hospital in Illinois. Night shift and weekend availability are required.
