Job Opportunity: Intermediate Care Unit (IMU) Nurse

Location: Wheeling, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Details

  • Unit: Intermediate Care Unit (IMU)
  • Beds: 30 (14 Private & 16 Semi-private)
  • Patient Ratios: Goal 1:4; typically 1:5; occasionally 1:6
  • EMR System: Sunrise
  • Nurse Aides: 2-3 CNAs with ratios 1:10-12
  • Charge Nurse: Takes full patient assignment on day & night shifts
  • Clinical Assistant: Works 2 twelve-hour shifts (with patient assignment) and 2 eight-hour shifts in office

Certifications Required

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NIHSS

Shift Information

  • Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM - 7:00 PM and 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM)
  • Weekend Requirement:
    • Nights: 4 weekend night shifts per 4-week schedule
    • Days: 4 weekend day shifts per 4-week schedule, but no one works straight days without also working at least 3 night shifts in 4 weeks
    • Only night shift is considered a straight shift
  • Holidays: Flexibility required; holidays usually covered by permanent staff
  • Self-Scheduling: Allowed with 4 requested days off per month

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Ability to read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips (Tele Techs available but RN must interpret)
  • Titrate drips including: Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetolol, Nitro, Heparin, occasionally Lasix
  • Manage patients with diagnoses such as chest pain, rule out MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post pacemaker, pre/post cardiac catheterizations (manage radial bands & remove but do not pull sheaths), groin checks, Tikosyn therapy
  • Rarely manage chest tubes
  • Float as needed to Telemetry or MedSurg units (ratios up to 1:6 or 1:7 in MedSurg, rarely) and Pandemic Unit

Support Services

  • Respiratory Therapy (RT) in-house 24/7 (RT manages all respiratory equipment including AirVo high flow and Respironics Bipap)
  • Hospitalist in-house 24/7
  • Intensivist in ICU 24/7
  • Residents in-house 24/7
  • IV Team in-house 24/7 (IV team performs all IV starts, including PICC/Midline)
  • Pharmacy in-house 24/7 with Pyxis system

Orientation

  • Day 1: Approximately 4 hours with HR, then 8 hours on unit with preceptor
  • Day 2: On unit with preceptor
  • After Day 2: Independent

Additional Information

  • Must have unexpired driver’s license
  • Licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission
  • Scrub color: Navy blue top & bottom, navy scrub jackets, no hoodies
  • Telemetry monitors: Nihon Kohden
