Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - Intermediate Care Unit (IMU)

Location: Wheeling, West Virginia
Unit: Intermediate Care Unit (IMU)
Beds: 30 (14 Private & 16 Semi-private)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Certifications Required

  • ACLS
  • BLS
  • NIHSS

Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: IMU (Intermediate Care Unit)
  • Years of Experience: Not explicitly stated; assume standard RN experience for IMU roles
  • Prior travel experience: Not required (no mention of prior travel experience needed)

Shift Details

  • 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM - 7:00 PM and 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM)
  • Must be on unit and ready by 6:45 AM/PM
  • Self-scheduling allowed with 4 requested days off per month
  • Weekend shifts required:
    • Nights: 4 weekend night shifts per 4-week schedule
    • Days: 4 weekend day shifts per 4-week schedule, but no one works straight days without also working nights (minimum 3 night shifts per 4 weeks)
  • Holidays: Flexibility required, but holiday shifts are usually covered by permanent staff

Staffing Ratios

  • Goal ratio: 1:4
  • Typical ratio: 1:5
  • Occasional ratio: 1:6
  • Nurse aides: 2-3 CNAs per shift with ratios of 1:10-12

Patient Care & Responsibilities

  • Manage drips including: Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetolol, Nitro, Heparin, occasionally Lasix
  • Interpret telemetry strips independently (Tele Techs available)
  • Manage patients with diagnoses such as chest pain, rule out MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post pacer, pre/post cardiac catheterizations, groin checks, overflow intermediate care patients, Tikosyn therapy
  • Rarely manage chest tubes
  • Floating required to Telemetry or MedSurg units, with ratios up to 1:6 or 1:7 (rare)
  • May be expected to float to Pandemic Unit

  • Hospitalist in-house 24/7
  • Intensivist in ICU 24/7
  • Residents in-house 24/7
  • Respiratory Therapists (RT) in-house 24/7 (manage all respiratory equipment)
  • IV Team in-house 24/7 (IV team performs all IV starts)
  • Pharmacy in-house 24/7 with Pyxis system
  • Telemetry monitors: Nihon Kohden

Orientation

  • Day 1: 4 hours HR, 8 hours unit orientation with preceptor
  • Day 2: Unit orientation with preceptor
  • After Day 2: Independent practice

Additional Notes

  • Scrub color: Navy blue top & bottom, navy scrub jackets, no hoodies
  • Must provide a copy of an unexpired driver’s license with submission
  • Licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission

This position offers a dynamic Intermediate Care Unit environment with a strong support team and a variety of patient care responsibilities suitable for experienced RNs comfortable with telemetry, drips, and critical care skills.
