Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN)

Location: Florence, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse - Operating Room (OR RN)
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7 AM - 7 PM)
  • On-Call: Yes, 2-star call until 11 PM weekly and every 3rd to 4th weekend
  • Weekend Requirement: Every 3rd to 4th weekend
  • Number of ORs: 12
  • Floating: No floating between service lines or sister facilities

Experience & Licensure Requirements

  • Years of Experience: Minimum 5 years in acute care operating room setting
    • Must be well-rounded with strong skills in general, neuro, ortho, ENT, and GYN surgeries
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted if they have broad specialty competency
  • Licenses: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license required
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) required
    • Radiation badge required (must be provided by agency; facility does not provide)
  • Trauma Level: Facility is a Level 3 trauma center

Scheduling & Hours

  • Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks; called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift
  • Block scheduling accommodations require manager approval and depend on unit needs

Important Seasonal Note

  • During hurricane season (June through November, peak in August and September), all employees and contractors may be assigned to emergency response teams. Travelers should avoid confirming new or extension assignments during this period if this is a concern.

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Work Eligibility: Completed and accurate I-9 form and E-Verify attestation
  • Identification: Copy of Driver’s License/State ID and Social Security Card
  • Background Checks:
    • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
    • Includes SSN trace, statewide, national criminal, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, and international searches
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education Verification: Diploma or transcripts preferred as placeholder if verification pending; not required for this facility
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Performance Evaluation: Must be dated within 12 months of start
  • Employment Application: Complete application or resume required
  • Skills Checklist: Must be updated annually for applicable units
  • Work History Verification: Not required for this facility

Certifications & Training Requirements

  • BLS: AHA or ARC only; must be valid beyond 30 days from start
  • ACLS: AHA or ARC only; required as per unit/job description
  • PALS: AHA or ARC only; as required
  • NRP: Must be through AHA/AAP; full eCard with QR code required
  • TNCC: Trauma Nursing Core Course; as required
  • EFM: AWHONN or NCC acceptable; as required
  • Radiation Badge: Required for OR staff; must be obtained prior to starting floor work
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement: Required
  • State License Verification: Primary source verification required; SC RN license processing times vary
  • NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs
  • IV Certification: Required for select LPNs if applicable
  • NIH Stroke Certification: As required
  • Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam: Required as applicable
  • Competency Exam: Required

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Initial and annual updates required, attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap: Required within 10 years of start or declination form completed
  • TB Testing:
    • Negative T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days of start (facility requires T-spot or Q-Gold; Florence location requires 2-step PPD or Quantiferon Gold)
    • If positive, proof of chest X-ray required
    • Annual TB questionnaire required
  • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; low titer requires boosters
  • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
  • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; low titer requires boosters
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted
  • Flu Vaccination: Required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30); medical/religious exemptions accepted but no declinations
  • COVID-19 Vaccination: Not required but highly preferred; vaccination records must be uploaded or declination form completed
  • Respirator Safety Clearance: Annual medical clearance required for all patient-facing travelers

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Photo for Badge: Passport-style photo with solid light background required
  • Orientation Modules: Must be completed prior to start; estimated 4 hours for Florence location
  • Assignment Acknowledgment, Code of Conduct, Confidentiality Agreements: Must be signed/reviewed prior to start
  • User Access and Job Description: Required for all candidates
  • Mini Orientation: Review and acknowledgement required for Florence location

  • Radiation badges may take 5-7 days to arrive; candidates cannot start floor work without them
