Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (MedSurg RN - Renal)

Location: Florence, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (MedSurg RN - Renal)
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (Days, 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)
  • Patient Ratios: 1:6-7
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend required
  • Holiday Rotation: Yes
  • On-call: No
  • Floating: Yes, may float to other med/surg units as needed

Experience & Licensing Requirements

  • Years of Experience Required: Minimum 1 year in specialty
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted
  • Licensing: South Carolina RN license or Compact license must be active prior to start
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or ARC only
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or ARC only (check unit-specific requirements)
    • PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM, NIH Stroke, Chemotherapy, and others as applicable (verify per unit)

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted (travelers only)
  • Block Scheduling: Approval can be requested but not guaranteed
  • Local Radius: 60 miles
  • Hurricane Season: Travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during hurricane season (June - November), with peak activity in August and September

Facility & Documentation Requirements

Background Checks & Verifications

  • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • Includes SSN trace, statewide, national criminal, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, and international searches
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification generally not required for this facility
  • NURSYS verification required for all RNs

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam updated annually, attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap within 10 years or declination form required
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 90 days of start (2-step PPD or Quantiferon Gold not accepted; T-spot or Q-Gold accepted)
  • Annual TB questionnaire required
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines; boosters required if low titer
  • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination form required
  • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines; boosters if low titer
  • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30)
  • COVID vaccination not required but highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Respirator medical clearance annually for patient-facing travelers

Certifications & Competencies

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required as applicable
  • Competency exam required
  • IV Therapy certification required for select LPNs (confirm if applicable)

Facility Specific Documents & Orientation

  • Completion of First Day Instructions (FDI) and OurDay modules prior to start (approx. 4 hours for Florence)
  • Clear, passport-style photo for badge required
  • Signed assignment acknowledgment, code of conduct, confidentiality agreements, HR policy manual, systems user agreement, user access request, job description, HIPAA confidentiality agreement, and employee info forms required prior to start
  • MINI orientation review and acknowledgement required
  • Physical assessment for sterile processors if applicable

References & Work History

  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations required
  • Performance evaluation dated within 12 months of start required
  • Complete employment application/resume required
  • Skills checklist updated annually required
  • Work history verification of last 3 clinical employers required unless waived by facility

  • Facility may accommodate block scheduling with prior approval
  • Travelers should be prepared for possible floating to other units within scope

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with at least 1 year of MedSurg experience, who is flexible with scheduling and floating, and holds or can obtain a South Carolina or Compact RN license. Prior travel experience is not required, making it suitable for first-time travel nurses.
