Description

Job Opportunity: Certified OR Tech / Surgical Tech (CST)

Location: Columbia, South Carolina
Specialty: Surgical Services (OR CST)
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Shift: 4 days per week, 10-hour shifts (6:45 AM – 5:15 PM)
  • On-Call: Yes, 1 call per week plus 1 late shift and 1-2 weekends every 6 weeks (may change based on staffing needs)
  • Weekend Requirement: 1 to 2 weekends every 6 weeks (covered in call requirement)
  • Floating: Yes, may float between service lines and possibly to sister facilities
  • Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks; called off hours can be broken down to add up to 1 shift

Experience & Certification Requirements

  • Years of Experience: Minimum 3 years preferred (first-timers not accepted)
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA certification only
    • NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) – MUSC does NOT accept NCCT
  • Radiation Badge: Required and must be provided by the agency (facility does NOT provide radiation badges)

Important Notes

  • Hurricane Season: Travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during hurricane season (June through November, peak in August and September). New or extended assignments during this time should be considered carefully.
  • Local Radius: 60 miles
  • Locals Accepted: Yes (at a reduced rate)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background Checks:
    • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years
    • Must include SSN trace, county/statewide checks, sex offender registry, national criminal, FACIS 3, employment and education verification
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Licensure:
    • South Carolina license required (primary source verification mandatory)
    • NURSYS verification required for RNs/LPNs/LVNs
    • Walk-through (temporary) license option available for SC RN license applicants without prior hits or convictions
  • Health Documents:
    • Physical exam within 90 days of start, updated annually, confirming ability to work without restrictions
    • Tdap vaccine within 10 years or declination form required
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
    • Required immunizations or positive titers for Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
    • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
    • Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 – Apr 30) or medical/religious exemption (no declinations accepted)
    • COVID vaccines highly preferred; if declined, must complete vaccination declination form
    • Respirator medical clearance required annually (RespSafety questionnaire)
  • Competency Exams: Medication/pharmacology competency and general competency exams required as applicable
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references required, including at least one from the unit of assignment
  • Skills Checklist: Annual update required for applicable units
  • Photo for Badge: Passport-style photo with solid light background, frontal view, shoulders up, no side views or posing

Orientation & Facility Specifics

  • Orientation Modules: Must be completed prior to start; estimated 2-6 hours depending on location
  • First Day Instructions (FDI): Sent after client clearance; includes OurDay login for module completion and vaccine documentation upload
  • COVID & Flu Documentation: Must be uploaded into the facility’s system (OurDay) before start
  • Radiation Badge Process: Candidates cannot start without radiation badge; badges may take 5-7 days to arrive after ordering

Additional Notes

  • Block scheduling accommodations possible with manager approval
  • Facility allows locals to work at a reduced rate
  • All required documents and verifications must be started within 48 hours of signing the contract

This position is ideal for experienced Certified Surgical Technologists who meet the certification and licensure requirements and are comfortable with on-call and weekend responsibilities in an acute care hospital setting.
