Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (CVICU) - Connecticut, New Haven

Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (CVICU - Cardiac ICU and Stepdown)
  • Location: New Haven, Connecticut
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Unit Description: Hybrid unit with 8 cardiac ICU beds and 6 cardiac stepdown beds. Majority of ICU patients are cardiothoracic surgery pre- and post-op, with occasional advanced heart failure cases. Stepdown includes cardiothoracic surgery, pulmonary vein (PV), and heart failure patients. Daily assignments vary between ICU and stepdown; floating within scope to stepdown as needed.
  • Patient Ratio: Average 1:3
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: Required within scope to meet facility needs
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated
  • Guaranteed Hours: Yes
  • Pending License: Accepted if active prior to start date
  • Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: Greater than 7 days requires approval

Experience & Certifications

  • Required Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years in specialty
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required (first-timers accepted)
  • Required Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • Comfort with High-Volume Cardiac (HVC): Required (5.4 must be comfortable)

Compliance & Requirements

Background Checks

  • 7-year criminal background check (must be updated annually)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Education verification including foreign equivalency for internationally educated RNs

Competency Exams

  • Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam (must score 85%)
  • Color Blind Testing (required for all candidates starting 8/2/2024, must score 80%)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (required for ICU units including CVICU)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months, updated annually (3M N95 preferred)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • Immunizations or titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
  • Tdap vaccination highly preferred for pediatric specialties, labor/delivery, postpartum (declination accepted)
  • 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID vaccination series preferred

  • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
  • Pyxis ES MedStation Modules
  • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
  • Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
  • Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Awareness
  • AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health/Psych, Home Health)
  • New Employee Orientation Module
  • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RN except Home Health)
  • Chaperone Policy Training (required if gap >6 months or updated module)
  • EPIC Testing (optional but highly encouraged for those with Epic experience)
  • Vaccination Booster Medical Exemption process available

Employment History & Verification

  • 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days
  • Work history verification required for all start dates on/after 8/2/2024
  • Skills checklist required within 12 months of start
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure required for certain tech and specialty roles
