Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (Operating Room)
  • Shift: 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM with holiday rotation
  • Weekend Requirement: Rotating weekends, including 1 weekend shift per month (6:30 AM - 7:00 PM Saturday or Sunday)
  • On-Call Requirement: Up to 4 call shifts per month (End of Shift to 7 AM), including up to 2 weekend call shifts (7 AM - 7 PM or 7 PM - 7 AM Saturday or Sunday)
  • Floating: Required to float within scope to meet facility needs, including sister units/facilities

Experience & Licensure Requirements

  • Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years strongly preferred
  • First-Time Travelers: Accepted
  • Licenses: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license required
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • Radiation Badge (provided by agency)
  • Preferred Experience: Scrub experience in OR
  • Trauma Level: Level 1 trauma center

Facility Highlights

  • Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
  • 21 Operating Room suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, Robotics
  • Nursing team: 75% RNs trained to scrub and circulate, 25% Certified Surgical Technologists
  • Charting system: EPIC
  • Parking: Permit required with a $20 registration fee for garage access (additional fees may apply for other parking locations)
  • Note: During hurricane season (June-November, peak in August-September), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background Checks:
    • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education Verification: Required (diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder)
  • Licensure Verification: Primary source verification required; SC RN license or compact license mandatory
  • NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Employment History: Verification of last 3 clinical employers required
  • Photo for Badge: Clear, passport-style photo with solid light background, frontal view, business casual attire

Certifications & Competencies

  • Mandatory Certifications:
    • BLS (AHA or ARC)
    • Radiation Badge (required for OR and related specialties)
  • Additional Certifications (as applicable):
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – required for critical care and some specialty units
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – required except for ER RNs
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – required for pediatric units except Peds OR
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) – as required
    • CHEMO certification – only for Oncology unit (not required for this OR role)
    • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) – as applicable
  • Competency Exams: Required, including medication/pharmacology competency and OR competency exams
  • Color Blind Testing: Required prior to start

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Initial and annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually (specific mask models required)
  • Immunizations & Titers:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titers or vaccination series with boosters as needed
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
    • Flu vaccine required during flu season or medical/religious exemption (no declinations accepted)
    • COVID vaccines highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)

Additional Notes

  • Block scheduling may be accommodated with manager approval based on unit needs
  • Local candidates accepted on a case-by-case basis
  • Facility allows calling off 1 shift per 2 weeks; called off hours can be broken down accordingly
  • Radiation badges may take 5-7 days to process; candidates cannot start without badge
  • Travelers must complete orientation modules and upload required vaccination documentation before start
  • Travelers should be aware of potential emergency response assignments during hurricane season

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity, academic Level I trauma center with a dynamic OR team and advanced technology. Candidates should be prepared for a fast-paced environment with rotating shifts, on-call duties, and floating responsibilities.
