Job Opportunity: Certified OR Tech / Surgical Tech (CST)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Surgical Services (Operating Room CST)
  • Shift:
    • 4x10 hour shifts, days (6:30 AM - 5:00 PM)
    • 1 weekend shift per month (Saturday or Sunday, 6:30 AM - 7:00 PM)
    • Holiday rotation included
  • Weekend Requirement: Rotating weekends
  • On-call: Up to 4 call shifts per month (End of shift to 7 AM)
  • Floating: Yes, may float within scope to meet facility needs or between like units/sister facilities

Experience & Skills

  • Required Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years in specialty
  • Preferred Experience: Neuro (spines/crani), ENT (flaps), Robotics (Da Vinci Xi) cases
  • Common Cases: Orthopedics (total joints, spine, trauma), Neuro (crani, spine), ENT (flaps), Robotics, Transplants/Procurements, Trauma/Burns, GU/GYN
  • First-time Travelers: Accepted
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required

Certifications & Licenses

  • Required:
    • NBSTSA Certification (NCCT NOT accepted)
    • BLS (American Heart Association or American Red Cross)
    • Radiation Badge (must be provided by agency)
  • Additional Preferred/Required Certifications:
    • ACLS (for certain units)
    • PALS (for pediatric units as applicable)
    • TNCC (as required, not for ER RNs)
    • Other certifications as applicable based on unit and specialty

Facility & Work Environment

  • Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
  • 21 Operating Room suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Ortho, Neuro, ENT, GU-GYN, Robotics
  • Nursing team: 75% Registered Nurses, 25% Certified Surgical Technologists
  • Busy, dynamic, nurse-driven environment with cutting-edge technology
  • Charting system: EPIC
  • Scrub color: Provided
  • Local radius for travel: 60 miles
  • Locals considered on a case-by-case basis

Scheduling & Hours

  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks; called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift
  • Block scheduling possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs

Important Notes

  • Hurricane season (June-November) may require assignment to emergency response teams
  • Parking available with permit and registration fee (details not included here)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background Checks:
    • Annual background check covering last 7 years of residence/employment
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Licensure:
    • South Carolina RN license or compact license required
    • Primary source verification required
    • NURSYS verification for RNs/LPNs/LVNs
  • Health Documents:
    • Physical exam updated annually
    • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
    • Immunizations and titers: Tdap, MMR (Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B
    • TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
    • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start
    • Flu vaccine or medical/religious exemption required during flu season
    • COVID vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Competency Exams:
    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required
    • Color blindness testing required prior to start
    • Competency exam for OR required
  • Facility Specific:
    • Orientation modules must be completed prior to start
    • Clear, passport-style photo required for badge
    • Radiation badge required and must be obtained before starting floor work
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references required
  • Employment History: Verification of last 3 clinical employers required
